I understand that it's portrayed as more than that - Jared was an advisor to the President, and Hunter supposedly has business ties to the President - but in reality, it's just another way to punish political opponents by going after family members.

I think you raise a valid point, we shouldn't willy-nilly investigate family. That said, if Hunter has in fact referenced "big guy" as Joe, it's more than just willy-nilly (even if not much more).
