We fired Sampson

Even Kraft points out Samscum resigned from OU to avoid being fired. IU hired him off the unemployment line.
Wasn't close to being fired from Oklahoma, he resigned from Oklahoma to take the IU job lol. Read Joe Castilgione's comments in almost any article regarding Sampson.

Really a car ride is worse than repeated systematic cheating in recruiting? You are either uninformed or a complete moron.
Impermissible phone calls were a secondary violation that carried the same penalty that Purdue/Frank Kendrick was hit with. Sampson compounded his issues by lying to NCAA investigators which is what really did him in....same goes for Jim Tressel, Bruce Pearl, etc

And it was his second offense on both the calls and lying to the NCAA investigators about it. Its grapes to watermelons to compare it to Kendrick giving Clay a ride back to the dorm.

It was a mistake to hire him as he already had issues at Oklahoma. At IU His players were failing and on drugs but hey, he wins, so check your ethics at the door.
Most people learn at an early age when as a kid if you get caught with your hand in the cookie jar once, you don’t do it twice. I’m sure that’s what IU thought when they hired Sampson. Unfortunately for IU, Sampson, as a slow learner, wasn’t like most people. An extra cell phone call seemed as insignificant as his mom’s freshly baked snickerdoodle cookies when not fully sated.

Wasn't there also an arrangement for a car loan for a recruit, player, or parent?

If Sampson doesn't lie to NCAA investigators, he's not hit with a show-cause and is still more than likely retained by IU. It's as simple as that. You can spin it any way you want, but impermissible phone calls were always a secondary violation.

Also, you're mixing up your players. Luther Clay wasn't the player involved in the improper ride benefit, that was a recruit who never ended up on campus whom Kendrick instructed to lie to the NCAA. Luther Clay was given a loan by a local bank that Kendrick co-signed for and never paid back. Clay transferred to Rhode Island and the loan was charged off.

One of Purdue's fired women's assistants sent a letter with a laundry list of accusations. 18 of the 20, including illegal payments to clay were proven baseless, other than the 4 mile car ride, the only other thing the NCAA giggled Purdue for was a "Purdue booster" giving illegal benefits to one of Purdue's players mother. This so called Purdue booster was an MSU aluminum and in consideration for the MSU AD position and was dating the mother in question. But there were IU grads on the NCAA investigation team, and their hands were heavy on the scales

The loan was from BankOne, in Columbus Ohio. Kendrick was not a co-signer, and it was Clay in the car. Kendrick lied on his own, not under any orders and was fired for it

Jamal Davis received the improper ride, not Luther Clay, and was instructed to lie about it because Kendrick/Purdue knew it was a violation.

"Kendrick’s credibility was damaged when the committee determined he had asked a recruit, Jamal Davis, to lie about an improper ride he had received on a campus visit."

"Clay transferred after his freshman season but later told the NCAA he received an improper $4,000 bank loan from a Lafayette bank under the understanding he wouldn't have to pay it back."

Thank you, I was sure both were Clay. I mis-remembered that part. The 10k loan was a student loan that many players got at all schools at the time as they weren't allowed to work or receive money.

It wasn't a 10k student loan, it was a $4k personal loan that was facilitated by Frank Kendrick

A "loan" that all knew was never going to be paid back. Didn't Bank One date back to the old Purdue National Bank in Laffy?

Then there was Porter Roberts' Mom of course

Frank Kendrick (RIP) was a good young coach that took the bullet for Keady and was then discarded.

But but but it was an MSU grad....in 3...2...1

here is the facts and actual truth. It is the only truth that is known. Since we fired him we have went to two sweet 16s in what 20 years now? Kelvin has also gone to how many now at a school that had won 2 tourney games since 85 before he came. Those are the facts.
In your case the only facts that matter is that he wins. How he wins does not matter. Thanks for making that clear.

I believe you’re referring to Charles Macon, a Purdue recruit who ended up at Ohio State for two seasons before transferring to finish at Central Michigan.

No. Jamaal Davis is the recruit who was instructed to lie to the NCAA about receiving an improper ride and Luther Clay is the one that faulted on a loan that was initiated by Kendrick and a Purdue booster. I linked both in a previous post.

You got me there. Mr Basketball for 1992/McD’s burger boy, Charles Macon chose Ohio State, coached by Randy Ayres, over Purdue, UCLA and Arizona. Being from Michigan City, at one time it was thought he was a Purdue lean. He did end up getting in trouble during his two year stay in Columbus. He drove away from a gas pump without paying and got busted for marijuana and a DUI. He averaged less than 5 pts/gm for Ohio State and 16-18/gm while at Central MI. He went un-drafted in the 1997 NBA cattle call.

Frank lied to the NCAA, it said so in the NCAA report, it also said if he just told the truth he would of just got a slap on the wrist, the NCAA restricted Frank, not Purdue, and stopped him from coaching! Purdue and Clay disputed the loan repayment, the NCAA took Clays story. The reason the 3 peat still counts is because Clay basically rode the bench when he was at Purdue. The Big Ten said they would did not agree, and still count Purdue's season record and the 3-peat. The Fort Wayne Urinial Gazette behind Ben Smith was the driving force behind the investigation. Gene was having to much success when he landed Big Dog, some in the Media did not like it.

Let’s not forget that under Sampson the Hoosiers were flunking out of school and failing drug tests. It was only a matter of time before the program imploded. It was only a matter of time before the program imploded.

By the same people with as few brain cells as this guy and now they all wear red hats around.
If you remember, people were happy to have a good coach. He wasn't hired because of his minority status or that we had just fired our first black head coach. FWIW, I'm betting most back then thought Sampson was black and not Native American,

You mean like Sampson has his Houston team getting ready to implode? How many college basketball players have flunked out of their school in the last quarter century? How many of Sampson’s players at any school have failed drug tests? Do top players even attend class?

Even Samson admits he became a much better coach after leaving IU. If they don't attend classes, they are at a minor league team and not an NCAA school. See UK, UTenn, and UNC among others as lowlife cheaters

I come from this time you speak of, this “back then”. No one thought he was Black. IU fans didn’t make a big deal about the Indian part either. Coming from Oklahoma, it made sense once we finally heard he had some “Pocohontas” blood coursing through his veins. We just considered him “one of us”, now go win some games. I think only Adam Herbert cared about his supposed “minority” status.

lol, ok homer.

According to Samscum, it was the second most effective way to cheat, behind only paying players, that was just before he got caught while he was college basketball association president calling for stricter controls and harsher punishments on guilty coaches, all while he was dialing away cheating his ass off.
He didn't do the dialing.

There were drugs under crean also. And as far as academics do they even go to class anymore or just take online tests? Nobody is ever ineligible anymore ever.

DEI term or not, Adam Herbert told me why he went with Sampson at Midnight Madness 2006. Pretty much the same lines. Stop name calling. Makes you look weak.
He called you MAGA boy for a second I thought this was the water cooler. Of course over there you would get attacked by about 80% of the people for being MAGA.

Then there is moving parents of a recruit and getting Mom a job. Pretty sleazy stuff back then
