We fired Sampson

And more than half of you STILL think it was for the better good. If we weren’t allowed a scholarship for a decade it wouldn’t have been worth it. IU the Harvard of the Midwest right boys???

The majority of that 2008 team was high most of the time. I was glad to see him go.

That’s yesterday in my calendar of never forgotten time. It was unsubstantiated hearsay then, as it remains today. Those rumors only came to light AFTER he was accused. It was a ruse to justify our loss, the tremendous loss we ultimately came to lament 17 years later.
If you don’t believe that there was a drugs issue and kids skipping classes and getting poor grades under Sampson, then that’s your choice. My understanding is this was common and accepted knowledge.

One if the biggest mistakes iu ever made was firing sampson. Oh and giving both archie and Woodson 4th years. Plenty of creans players were high. But hey we got our moral high horse

What are these grades you speak of? These aren't student athletes anymore. Are you OK with the current players likely not going to class cause I bet they don't. They take some easy online test where they can look up the answers.

Yet, despite all but a few players strung out on a season of illicit drug use of only God knows what, the team was 22-4 at the time of his firing. Gosh, just think if those druggies had remained focused. They might have challenged our own undefeated season.

Does it say anything that no other player could be contacted to substantiate Goody-two-shoe Gordon’s claims? Likely.

Hey man. I really could not care less. I think it happened. You don’t. At the end of the day, what difference does it make? That said, find an article or someone going on record saying that it didn’t happen or denying the claims by Gordon.

“Common and accepted knowledge” usually comes with more detailed facts and from more than one source to substantiate it, don’t you think? Are we talking weed on weekends? Free basing in the back of the team bus? Syringes and rubber tubing in the locker room. Come on, Man, give me what you got and then we’ll talk about which players skipped how many classes and actually flunked out from these poor grades.

I don’t need to prove anything to you tough guy. It seems like you are in denial that IU was a total dumpster fire under Sampson. Yet he had the awesome basketball record. Articles provided regarding APR. kids don’t get kicked off the team because they “skip class”. It’s far deeper than that. But you know what, you’re right. It was all squeaky clean when Sampson was in Bloomington, Gordon made it all up and no one refuting any bit of it only solidifies Gordon as a tattle tell baby. Don’t know details. Don’t care. I just know what the fallout was and it stemmed from a total shitshow.

If anyone thinks drinking and weed smoking wasn’t happening at IU during the 80s & 90s, I’ve got ocean front property in Arizona. I’m not saying it was every damn one of them, but it was happening. Unbelievable, I know, but 18, 19 & 20 year old kids who are away from home and treated like celebrities, well, sometimes they do shit. Sometimes they even do the same shit that a lot of other kids at the school do too.

I know, I know…some on this forum are thinking “well, my child wouldn’t…….”. Yeah, anyway, about that real estate in Arizona.

I think some of them were smoking weed, drinking beer, skipping some classes and making poor, but acceptable grades…just like any other year, including the Bob Knight Era. It sounded to me like Gordon might have had a bone to pick, not while sitting in Buffalouies here. Making an accusation like that, I imagine he didn’t have too many teammates he could call ‘close friend’ during that one year of his here. He might harbor deep-seated resentment.

I bet Gordon had a one-track mind on the NBA during his lone season of college ball. He might have resented other teammates able to enjoy the social activities of the less focused/disciplined but more normal students.

Well, you can make up whatever you want. If you want to whine about over 15 years ago and say the admin just didn't like Sampson, go ahead.
You ask for facts from everyone else but you're the one beating the drum (and the dead horse) using opinion pulled out of thin air.

And Dakich must have just wanted better players and felt it was best to trash the possibility of a tournament run.

You're right. I can see how your opinion all makes sense now. That's what happened.

Woodson and others were caught smoking dope during the pre-season’s Great Alaskan Shoot-Out. He just wasn’t one of the five to deny it to Knight’s face so was allowed to stay.

I bet there are even some players engaging in pre-marital sex acts, exploratory in nature or otherwise. The list grows longer.

It’s not that the administration didn’t like Sampson. It’s just that they over-reacted, sinking their own ship. Bob Knight’s stunning firing coming after such an insignificant act of common decency reprimand on the steps of Assembly Hall, followed by the final realization of an awkward hiring mistake in Mike Davis blowing up in our faces…is it any wonder the administration panicked in reporting an abnormal number of phone calls?

UNC gets caught offering phantom classes for athletes and doesn’t suffer like we’ve had to over sneaky cell phone usage that probably gained us no recruiting advantage.

It’s like people forget we noticed the calls, and turned ourselves in. Name one other program that has done something that dumb. I can name a bunch that have swept far worse under the rug. Guess what, no one cares about them doing it either. IU hung themselves.

I can't name one. Iu is about as dumb as they come. Destroyed their own program.

Should have handled it in house. Not saying endorse it or let it continue but deal with it internally.

He was handed a five year show cause. Indiana had no choice.

IU had a choice - to not self-report like most schools would have done. I remember at least one time UK got caught then fought & denied right up until the NCAA threatened to kick them out. There was more to the Sampson story than the phone calls. There was a group including former players who did not want him hired (wanted a former player instead?) or didn't like the way it went down & formed a pretty good lobby.
Going back further, if UCLA practiced IU's self reporting strategy, Wooden would have been fired in 1967 and their record(s) vacated through 1975. A three way call was not good, but neither was Papa Sam's infusion into the UCLA program including paying players, paying for abortions, buying them cars, travel, apartments etc. etc. These things were not done in the shadows; it was common knowledge around campus. Long after Wooden retired, the NCAA put UCLA on "probation" for all the systemic violations.

Let my guess quinn and Woodson were leaders of the lobby.

Won't matter, you only care about winning; cheating, lying, drugs, its all fine to you if IU just wins. Knight would hate you as a fan.

You know Knight beat kids, verbally assaulted everyone, and shot someone in the woods right?

Truth of the matter remains, Knight loved my ass as a loyal fan of his. If I had fished, we’d have fished as fishing buddies in the same fishing boat, sharing fishing stories all the while.

Not Woodson. I don't remember where QB stood on it, but they were not the leaders.
And that is why we have been garbage for 20 years. They are more interested in hiring a former player instead of winning. Thats the difference between us and the other bluebloods who never had the fall off like we did.
