I assume that Volvo have done their numbers and think it will hit critical mass by then -- mainstream. Brave move otherwise.

How will governments raise funds/taxes to replace the revenues from the petrol tax? Much large component in other governments than in the States.

It'd be part of your registration/licensing fees for your vehicle. I know a mileage tax has also been discussed.

What they are thinking of doing here (Singapore) is to put an Electronic Road Pricing GPS based device in the car -- you will be charged (or the value card in the device will be deducted) per kilometre. (We already have a device in cars for when you enter/leaving the EBD during peak hours.)

That may work in Singapore, but wouldn't in the U.S. Think about a manufacturing employee in rural Iowa that drives 45 min to work, whose nearest town for supplies is 60 min drive, etc. You would be effectively penalizing those that don't live in cities.

You can adjust it to location -- GPS after all. But with GPS, there is an issue in tunnels esp long ass tunnels like what we have here. 10km underground in length.

That's what already happens with the gas tax with the current system. Someone who drives 45 min to work/60 min to town pays more in gas tax since their car is putting more miles on the road. They contribute more to the road degrading so they pay more $$ for the upkeep/maintenance of roads through the gas tax.

Makes sense. Carry on then.

This is another reason people move just outside of city limits. That allows them to be a parasite on all that the municipality offers but don't want to pay for it.

While true, I think it it likely falls below things like safety, education, and housing cost. But, it is as factor nonetheless.

In Indiana, they have local income tax for your county of employment too (although that's much less than the residential income tax).

Poor business model since one of the largest markets, the USA, will soon be switching to coal fired vehicles so the West Virginians and Kentuckians will have jobs again. Apparently they have not been paying attention to the proclamations of our L- - - in Chief.
