I’m not sure Cignetti is comfortable turning over the offense to either redshirt freshmen if Mendoza goes down. I think he’s looking to add one more upperclassman in the portal as the primary backup.
Then why take the high school QB.

I think they want to develop them for two years and get them in the rotation. I am not so sure that the younger Mendoza isn't ahead of Cherry
I think the younger Mendoza is ahead of him.
If I had to guess, I would imagine he likes a lengthy depth chart so next year, come the 2026 season, if/when a QB transfers, he is more likely to have someone with at least a full season with IU's offense, under their belt.
You should take a QB in every class.

Cherry won’t get meaningful minutes in his first 3 years which means…..

Cherrys best chance of playing for IU is to go somewhere else, get experience/production and come back via the portal. I don’t blame him if he is looking for another team.

Have no idea. But with our present situation he was the ideal backup. Obviously didn’t want to play second string again and I completely understand, but now we're scrambling for an experienced backup QB. I think it's going to be hard to find one as capable.
I don't really understand why the younger Mendoza or Cherry can't be ready as the backup. When are they ever going to get the chance?
It's up to coach CIG. If he thinks they're ready we don't need another QB.
The only caveat is when you took 2 in the class before

If we find another portal QB, he won't be a freshman.
The QB from Arizona State is a RS Freshman,,he more than held his own this season.

Leavitt at least had played prior to this year and had some experience to build on.
Yes I agree but I still think you would have a better chance of getting one of those two ready as opposed to finding a back up in portal,maybe not🤷♂️
I’d also have to think that it would be terrible optics for recruits. The recruited kids have to get a shot to gain experience and possibly a starting role during their IU career. Bringing in a transfer to man the backup role would be demoralizing to the young guys.
As paramount as QB is to success searching for a starting/better QB in the portal is becoming the new paradigm. Proved this season by the success of many past unsuccessful programs.
Coach Cig has frequently touted the ability for his staff to coach up QBs. Second or third year guys better be strongly in the mix to compete to start or in the future recruits will pass on us.

They were unable to coach up Tayven to where they believed in him, seemingly. One miss doesn't mean much though. Gotta have the raw talent to be coached up. He did improve a lot it looked like to me.

I don't think Cig really cares.
If he brings in more competition and a kid transfers out, then they probably weren't as good as who we brought in.
Cigs has said that after this year, he plans to move more towards hs recruiting and away from depending on the portal as much. Of course, that may not include the QB position.
If cigs prioritize production over potential so much that hs recruits think they will never get to play, then it could become an issue.
I just feel that Cig has a feel for who's progressing and who isn't, so if he feels like someone would be a good fit and help us, he's going to go after them and if a kid transfers because of it, I don't think he'll lose sleep over it.
To your last point, I don't want a kid here who doesn't think they can see the field, so if someone doesn't come because they think they will get passed over, that's not someone we should want on the roster, IMO.
Saying more along the lines of a kid that thinks he is great but also thinks the coach will always go with someone who has produced on the field over the player that committed as a freshman and hasn't had a chance.

Production over potential is Cig's preferred transfer portal recruiting strategy. It doesn't mean you won't see the field if you haven't played before.

100% disagree with this. They didn't miss at all on Tayven. He still has limited experience, but wants to start. Can't blame him. Next year will be his 4th year on a college campus. If not now, when? They coached him up enough to continue the curb stomping vs Nebraska and to beat Washington. He'll be a really good player where ever he lands, but knew they were bringing in Mendoza to start in front of him. It also was probably pretty obvious to him little Mendoza and Cherry were both closing the gap on him. He had to go. It's the new world of college football.

I said the coaches didn't get him to where THEY believe. So that's a miss.
Can say all you want about just 'bringing in competition' for Tayven, but if Coach Cig believed in Tayven, Mendoza wouldn't be coming. They would use the NIL elsewhere.

23 pass attempts In 2023. He played less than 4 games at MSU. Virtually no significant experience.

Probably going to find out a Florida, Georgia, Texas 2/3* qb recruit etc.. is > than a 3/4* Indiana recruit. The HS as a whole in those areas are just better.
