Nice. Good to heardallas james brilliantly smart, practice player only, good with it
Kopp interview with Walsh touched on that. The IU network while playing and after playing is pretty massive. They are using that to recruit. The NIL cash is the quick money but the rest is life changing and Kopp said it’s insane compared to his other stop.just got home, met some people expectations are high, lot of invested money, they believe, 13th player is an amazing individual will make more money outside of basketball than the rest will make playing basketball over his lifetime
Nice to be taking advantage of the size of our program after so many years not really doing that.Kopp interview with Walsh touched on that. Not sure what the answer will be but Leal does seem like a super good dude.Leal??
He is trying to take as much advantage of being on IUs basketball team as possible. Very smart. Not sure what the answer will be but Leal does seem like a super good dude.
Woodson couldn't get the guards we needed last year. He was forced to rely too much on X's return. He learned from that. We did as good as I would have expected with Cupps and Gallo being our starting guards for most of the season.it's way, way better than what it was towards the end of Crean and Archie. He's brought back many former players, and seems to be working to prioritize IN kids. Could it be better? Absolutely, but give credit where it's due; he's improved the program and fanbase and the players seem to love playing for him.

Now we have a bench full of potential. Will they play well together? Are they mentally tough? No use predicting what will happen or who will start. I want that to be decided based on who wins on game day and not lock in a starting 5 and never change it. I'd like to start games with players that would disrupt our opponents game plan and force them to constantly adjust. I believe we have that kind of roster.
Larry Brown is the only example I can think of.I think that's totally fair, and agree, Woodson has legit criticisms to answer. Personally, I don't think he'll get us to the results we are looking for. I really don't get why at this level anyone hires someone who has no HC experience in college. DeShaun Foster is going to flame out at UCLA I believe, I remember similar questions when NC St hired Sydney Lowe, and Woodson still has a lot to deliver on his promises. Any good examples where it has really worked to hire someone with no college coaching experience? None come to mind.
But he has definitely improved the unity of the fanbase and I think with IN HS coaches who seemed to hate Archie and Crean. Striking out on Sisley, Mullins and Haralson would be very telling. Bare minimum I think he needs 1 of those guys and 2 would be good.
I got a question. Does Coach Woodson call Ballo, Balloway?I didn't realize Tucker is 6'7. I bet we see a lot of him and Goode/Mack, two guards, and one of Ballo/Malik.
2-3 inches taller than Gallo for sure, only a few shorter than Malik
Had to look it up, but his coaching record is so weird, not sure that is accurate. Wiki lists his first coaching experience as an asst at UNC, then coached 2 ABA teams, then UCLA, then the Nets, then Kansas. I forgot about the UCLA stint and it was only a couple years/seasons. Don't recall why that was. At any rate, if you're counting the KU stint as the success, he'd already been a college coach prior and he was at UNC for several years in the late 60s, at the beginning of his coaching career. It appears he went back to playing in the ABA afterwards. Guy is mercurial.Larry Brown is the only example I can think of.
Ha, his job history is insane.Had to look it up, but his coaching record is so weird, not sure that is accurate. I was thinking about his UCLA stint. Wasn’t counting his assistant job at UNC. At any rate, I’ve always thought of him as a pro coach who for some reason chose to coach in college a couple of times.Had to look it up, but his coaching record is so weird, not sure that is accurate. seems right. Do you remember why he was at UCLA such a short time? Nets offered that much more than UCLA, or did he have a controversy/problem at UCLA?I was thinking about his UCLA stint. He immediately became the fall guy for all of the transgressions that took place under Wooden's watch.seems right. Do you remember why he was at UCLA such a short time? Nets offered that much more than UCLA, or did he have a controversy/problem at UCLA?
Immediately? Third coach after Wooden left and 4 years later; doesn't sound right. Ironically a friend was Gene Bartow's daughter and he replaced JW at UCLA, but took the new UAB job 2 years later because they also made him AD and I think she said it more than doubled his salary, not to mention a dollar went a bit farther in Birmingham AB than Southern CA. His son Murray later replaced him at UAB and ultimately was interim coach at UCLA when Alford was dismissed. I've guessed that they are the only father-son duo who have coached at 2 different D1 programs. Super nice family. He immediately became the fall guy for all of the transgressions that took place under Wooden's watch.
Yep. I hope they sell the hell out of it, but not sure the message gets through with both Haralson and Mullins going elsewhere. I guess everyone thinks they'll be an NBA All-Star and won't ever need to tap that network, but it's a huge plus and I think both guys potentially cost themselves IF they aren't in the NBA for a long time. Be curious to hear someone like Eric Gordon or Thomas Bryant's view on how beneficial their IU connections have been to them.Kopp interview with Walsh touched on that. He resigned after 2 seasons, but it's a guess as to why. Was first sign the man never stayed on a job for a long period of time. That UCLA title appearance was later vacated for ineligible players.seems right. Do you remember why he was at UCLA such a short time? Nets offered that much more than UCLA, or did he have a controversy/problem at UCLA?
I don’t recall anything out of the ordinary about his UCLA experience. I just thought, along with many others, that he grew tired of recruiting, which is why I was surprised when he took the KU job. On a related note, a KU grad friend of mine told me that Brown caused a local scandal by getting involved with a young coed, which was a factor in him leaving there.seems right. Gordon is still in the league, TB I think too? Those aren't the guys it has helped. You wanna talk to Coverdale and Newton.Be curious to hear someone like Eric Gordon or Thomas Bryant's view on how beneficial their IU connections have been to them.
Not the angle I'm talking about. If you're Braylon Mullins or Jalan Harralson, do you think you're going to be Eric Gordon or Tom Coverdale? I'm saying I'll bet Gordon and TB both might've still leveraged the IU network, even though they are getting NBA paydays. If I were talking to Mullins and could say "Even Eric Gordon has benefitted from his IU ties, with his other investments and business ventures...", that has merit. If you are trying to sway guys who have NBA aspirations, you need to to show that it can still benefit them directly and not just as a "fallback plan".Gordon is still in the league, TB I think too? Those aren't the guys it has helped. You wanna talk to Coverdale and Newton.
He looks like he should stick for a few years. Doubt he’s a one and done, but man can he elevate. Most athletic guy on the team (unless Newton hasn’t showed it yet)tucker is a confident kid and not scared, I like that, he came in firing last night. will have some big games this year, but also some freshman moments.
TB plays for Miami.Gordon is still in the league, TB I think too? Those aren't the guys it has helped. You wanna talk to Coverdale and Newton.
Scrolled through this whole thread and still see no bragging about our 3-pt shooters.
How awesome is it that we have a burger boy, and no1 thinks he is starting? Tuck might have something to say about that. If he can start at the two over Kanaan and Trey, watch out.
Oh and Goode was a huge pick up, great shooter, pressure player. Been there done that, gonna be hard to keep him off the court.
Goode should be, because he had no business being on the floor if he isn’t a sharp Shooter.Scrolled through this whole thread and still see no bragging about our 3-pt shooters.
Do we even have a decent 3-pt shooter other than Mbako?
he's got Kopp written all over him, difference is we don't need him 30 mins a game, was told Newton is an absolute freak athlete.Goode should be, because he had no business being on the floor if he isn’t a sharp Shooter.
He was, might never be the same tho.was told Newton is an absolute freak athlete.
I think he will they are being overly cautiousHe was, might never be the same tho.
The season is early. My depth chart right now hasn't changed much from preseason. I like Reneau an awful lot as a stretch 5. He's much better in transition than I thought he'd be.
5- Reneau, Ballo
4- Mgbako, Tucker, Goode
3- Tucker, Galloway
2- Carlyle, Galloway
1- Rice, Galloway
8 players for 200 minutes with Goode around 15mpg. I would like to see a sprinkling of Newton in there at the 3 and 2 positions. It feels like to me Woody is trying to keep promises and match minutes to payroll. There isn't a more versatile and talented 8 man rotation in the country if deployed properly, but I doubt there's anyone in the business that expects Woody to put it together. We will look back at this group and shake our head "what a shame."
