During his comedic speech at the Gridiron Club dinner Saturday night, President Donald Drumpf appeared to mix up North and South Korea when bragging about speaking to one of the countries.

New York Magazine‘s Daily Intelligencer reported Monday that Trump made a comment about “de-nuking” where he suggested he’d spoken with North Korea — but that conversation actually took place with South Korea.

“It was headed for disaster and now we’re talking,” Trump said during the dinner. “They, by the way, called up a couple of days ago; they said, ‘We would like to talk,’ And I said, ‘So would we, but you have to denuke.'”

South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency claimed that Trump actually spoke with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, rather than Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea.

South Korea, the Intelligencer noted, does not have nuclear weapons. They were also the host of the 2018 Winter Olympics that ended just over a week ago

An honest mistake. They all look alike.

Trump’s North Korea gambit blindsides U.S. diplomats

President Trump’s high-wire gambit to accept a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un sets off a scramble among U.S. officials to assemble a team capable of supporting a historic summit of longtime adversaries and determine a viable engagement strategy.

State Department officials, including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, were playing down the immediacy of talks in the hours before the White House rolled out the South Korean national security adviser, who made the surprise announcement that Trump would meet with Kim.

Hours earlier, Tillerson said there may be no talks at all. “We’re a long way from negotiations. We just need to be very clear-eyed and realistic about it,” said Tillerson, who is in Africa. He said he did not yet know whether “the conditions are right to even begin thinking about negotiations.”
Tillerson and his colleagues were quickly upstaged by the White House with an announcement that the president himself would meet the North Korean leader.

'North Korea is very complicated. Most people didnt know this.'
