Transfer Portal Targets

I don't know if NIL is a "concern," but we are not near the top-10 schools in terms of NIL. This is a big part of what makes this year so impressive.

That list isn't very accurate. Oregon at #19? No way. And keep in mind something like half of our collective is going towards bball.

IU appears to be doing fine with NIL, and for guys like Mendoza I wouldn't be concerned. But we aren't some super NIL-flush program right now.
The IU NIL figure is pretty accurate. They mention that Oregon is probably low, particularly with Phil Knight in play, but not sure how much of his money is going toward NIL and not the university athletic fund (2 separate entities).
Ballo was reportedly $1.2 million. The rest of the team collectively? Probably $3 million total?

Bball is about $6M.

Right. That’s part of my point.

We spent around $4M on our roster this year. The big programs spend $10-20M. We’ve got more NIL for the ‘25 roster, how much more I’m not sure, but we have a ways to go to the top programs. We can’t say NIL isn’t a concern.

To be clear I don’t think anything is wrong, we have made huge progress.
I believe IU has enough NIL to keep their current roster intact most years and the necessary funds to land the productive players from the lower conferences that appeal to Cig. I believe in certain instances we can come up with the money for a splash transfer or two when needed ie Fernando Mendoza or someone like that. No I don't believe IU will ever directly compete with the Ohio State's or the Michigan's of the world in the portal every year but IU has more than a competitive NIL base that should only grow stronger with consistent results.

That and if IU plans on allocating the necessary rev share money football will always be in good shape.

That's how I see it. I assume we'll allocate rev share 75-80% to FB like most schools, and that will be very helpful to close the payroll gap since the rev share is capped. If we can inch our FB NIL to be top-15 or 20 over the next few years, that plus rev share should put us in a pretty nice spot competitively. 13 months ago I could not have dreamed of being in such a position.

Thieneman must have been thoroughly unimpressed with the Odom selection. That's a family with deep Purdue roots right?

Thought I also saw somewhere that Wisconsin is after Danny O’Neill (QB from Indy who ended up at San Diego State but is now apparently in the portal)

In a run heavy scheme like UM’s, guess McCulley will be expected to block better than he did for IU.
fwiw if IU’s after the Robinson from USC, he’s basically a carbon copy of McCulley but then I’m not sure how critical it is to Cig to replace McCulley’s contributions anyway

I don’t know how much interest there was, but I do know that Cig followed both Jackson Arnold and Miller Moss when they first entered the portal. Not sure if the interest wasn’t reciprocated. Probably hard to recruit a QB with no QB coach announced for next season.
Cignetti himself was a QB coach for a number of years.

Yes, I understand that, but he isn’t coaching QBs now. So, I don’t think that’s relevant. I don’t believe he spends any significant amount of time with them. I believe he will hire a good coach, but if I was a player thinking about transferring in I would want to know who my position coach will be.

That is what concerns me about Mendoza. Why would he wait to commit to another school unless he really wants to go to IU, and is willing to wait and see who the QB coach is. Or, he has been told in confidence if one has already agreed but wants to wait to announce.

I think it’s safe to assume that Sunseri-Foster/UCLA were negotiating well before the regular season was over, Cig was well aware of it, and as a result Cig was also in informal discussions with potential replacements for Sunseri.

As such I would expect that Cig is able to inform any potential QB recruits (“off the record”) who their likely position coach would be.

Plus, I’d think any legit QB would be a helluva lot more interested in the OC and scheme. The position coach is secondary at best.
