Transfer Portal Hits 1000

Per report the NCAA men's basketball transfer portal is now at 1000. Wonder how high it'll go?
Put me on the side of this being a bad idea, but it's done.
Also wondering how graduation rates will be affected over time.

It can't be a bad idea. Worse case scenario is it's potentially a hard, real-life lesson on making bad choices and living with the consequences. Best case scenario, someone gets out of a bad situation for them and finds a place to thrive.

I have no issue with the portal. Kids should never be forced to stay at a school they do not want to be at. Likewise I like the NIL. If other people can make money off these athletes, they themselves should be able to as well.

However their clearly needs to be some sort of tampering rules. Like no contact until player hits the portal rules.

I agree, but it's gonna take some getting used to and it will make policing things exponentially harder, but the NCAA was already doing a shit job. I'd love to hear Bilas' comments on NIL and the portal.

Also, for all the complaints about money ruining college sports, it all boils down to TV. That’s where the money is made and without TV, there’s less booster interest/involvement. Want less money in sports, stop watching games and just look at the box score the next day.

I agree. I think also that things went south when the rules changed to allow immediate eligibility. I am firmly of the opinion that regardless of circumstance, making the player sit the first year ( with no loss of eligibility) would stop a lot of the shenanigans. Programs simply shopping for immediate fixes would be deterred, and players might be a bit more inclined to hang in with the school that made a commitment to them. I believe that to be true of graduate transfers as well.

The immediate eligibility aspect of the portal gives average players a much better chance of changing schools while still retaining a scholarship. If you dislike your present coach/school/teammates enough that the only other option is quitting, maybe it's worth a gamble.

Before the change, you had to be a very good player for another program to find it worthwhile to have you on scholarship while sitting out a year. That is, a transfer had to be significantly more likely to be productive in 2 years than a freshmen recruit. How many schools would take Jake Forrester or Cliff Moore if they had to sit a year after they transferred?

Only problem for the average player is the musical chairs issue....will there even be a scholarship available elsewhere?

They should just have to sit out a year before playing for another school.

New transfer recruiting model:

Good morning (name),
I am inquiring to see if you would be interested in transferring into our program. We have great facilities and a very enthusiastic alumni. In fact you have been pre-approved for a $75,000 NIL deal with incentive upside. We will pick your major and your classes - most of which are modeled after the North Carolina African American studies program.

We ask that you commit within 5 business days.
Thank you for your consideration.

Why? do you have to sit out a year if you change jobs?
Depends on the job, but in some cases if you take a job, and the employer invests a lot of expensive marketable training in you and then you quit, you can be obligated to repay the costs of that training. I've heard of this with truck driving, of all things, if the trucking company pays for your CDL school. How it's enforced I don't know. In other cases, you may be bound by a non-compete agreement for a period of time.

my industry has non-compete agreements...if you change jobs, you had better be very careful of where you go, and what you will be doing, especially if it involves work with customers from your previous job. I have co-workers who have been hit with lawsuits. It does happen. Pretty scary getting sued by a multi-billion dollar corp with an entire floor full of Manhattan lawyers just looking to justify their inflated salaries.

Read the employment agreement and know what you are signing.

To be honest, it’s kind of amazing IU only needed 2 transfers from the portal last year (3 if you count Stewart from Archie) and may only need 1 this year.

Not a ton of playing time to sell at this point I guess, so it will be interesting to see who they get for the one open spot.

all depends on TJD decision and then Race. Could be limited PT, or a huge vacuum in the front court.

13 LSU players on scholarship last year
11 now in the porta1
2 going into the draft
All 4 previously committed recruits backed out

What a mess!

I think the only thing you can do is really stringent no contact rules with significant penalties. Right? I honestly don't know the answer.

I would have it be tied to academics. If a player has a certain GPA, no fails, and on track credit wise to graduate in 4 years, then that player doesn't have to sit a year. Or something to that effect.

Thoughts?

Out. Of. Control. No way this can continue “as-is”. Look for NCAA to reform it once it settles into a defacto standard process, thereby rubber stamping it.

Also wondering how graduation rates will be affected over time.

How can teams really have continuity in their program when they keep shuffling players like this? Also will it hamper kids from getting better because if a coach really coaches up the players and gets on them they can just leave?

With the NIL money maybe a few hours can be purchased.
