Tom Ostrom interviewing for Northern Kentucky job

Other than being an IU grad, is there any evidence that Lewis is a good coach? I mean that in the nicest way possible. He clearly is not a recruiter: https://247sports.com/Coach/Michael-Lewis-2382/

There seems to be a disconnect around here of wanting the be a blue blood (ie getting the best of the best players and coaches) and needing a "Hoosier" in every position we have open (ie the "Kids from Indiana are just better basketball players!" bs). I'm all for having Indiana folks in every role and position, but I would much rather have the best we can get, wherever they are from (players, coaches, admin, etc). Just curious is Lewis fits the bill.

Someone thinks he can coach..., Butler and Nebraska both hired him...

Hard to believe he doesn't have some recruiting connections here in Indiana...

If he could just coach them to shoot free throws we might win three more games a year...

This linked article gives a fairly in depth view of ML's resume' (you have to read the entire thing):

https://www.courierpress.com/story/...chael-lewis-rising-star-local-ties/425841002/

Reads like he'd be a good one to me...

I liked his quote on recruiting (paraphrased by me): "if you bring the wrong guy in, he'll beat you every day"...

He clearly understands there's more to finding players than just finding great athletes...

If Ostrom leaves, bring in Michael Lewis
I thought about Lewis when I heard from an Ohio U grad that Ostrom was being discussed for that opening.

I believe Archie and Lewis would have a similar background and that would either work out very well or they would want to kill each other.

I am sure Archie has a long list of names he would like to hire. Lewis may be attractive for his school ties and B1G experience.

Let's offer Fife a ton of money just to piss off Izzo and make him give Dane a big raise. They can't let Fife go as he knows too much about the rapes and the "big fish".
Fife needs to get out of MSU if the legal hounds start digging deeper into Izzo and his knowledge of sexual violence cases over many years against his players and the possible systemic cover up by the MSU athetic department over his career at MSU.

.....and where better than coming back home?

I think Fife made a calculated move to MSU as an assistant because he assumed MSU had a great chance of making a title run and over a period of time under Izzo, his resume (combined with his decent success at launching the old IPFW) would garner him a decent major job. So essentially, he thought by going to MSU he locked himself into a great contract for 5-10 years that would eventually feed him into either the next coach at MSU or a high level job somewhere else. I can't say that plan is failing but his name has yet to be spoken about in any of the decent openings that have come up over the years. He's unproven but he has had some great tutelage over the years so I think he is as ready as any assistant possibly could be for a top HC job.

I do not think Fife made a "calculated" move to MSU -- I think he was working horrendous hours and going broke at Fort Wayne. I read an interview in which he described how all the "nice" furniture in his office at Fort Wayne was used and had been donated unexpectedly and that his budget at Fort Wayne would not even allow him to buy the same, used furniture.

I don't blame him for going to MSU to earn real money as an assistant coach; Nonetheless, I don't think it was necessarily a well-calculated master plan to replace Izzo, take over the world, etc.

I like Fife but, if IU hired him as head coach my heart would cheer loudly for him to succeed, while my head would whisper only, "I hope so."

I think Fife thinks he can be the coach in waiting at MSU when Izzo retires. But what if Izzo is fired if something awful or unlawful is revealed in the systemic MSU sexual violence cases investigation?

Fife would be better served to stay at MSU.
If Izzo gets fired, he could still possibly be the ‘interim’ or the replacement. Or would be seen as valuable for working w Izzo, and in position to be hired anywhere as a major college head coach.

If Fife came to IU as an asst, he’d likely be let go with Archie and the staff at seasons end...and looking for a new job, w no gain in career from assistant to Archie.

I’d be willing to bet Fife feels confident that his career path has prepared him to be a major college head coach more than Archie’s...and thus would not want to work under Archie.

Izzo has more risk of a catastrophic end of career move if a Sandusky type witch hunt happens at MSU. Fife may be betting on Izzo being untouchable.

MSU has a lot bigger issues to deal with in their athletic department than IU.

Probably the part he quoted and I quoted that it is a certainty in your mind that Archie will be let go at the end of the season.

Are you a big money donor and going to get him fired?

No...Im a low level donor and season ticket holder.
Id rather him do his job better, win, make the tourney and succeed. I want IU to be a winner.
In 2 seasons, Archie’s not proven to be taking IU on an upward trajectory.

Everyone loves a winner...

Archie is at IU, so you need to get with the program, and support him, so IU can succeed.

Me approving or not on Archie’s lackluster performance to date has absolutely 0% effect on the IU bb program.

If it has any more than a 0% effect - let me know and I will post more often...

Fife being an assistant will last a long time IMO just like dakich and knight. Likely with a similar outcome. (Fife becoming a shitty commentator like dakich)

Let's hope not.
Unless he turns against MSU if Izzo goes down in flames and takes him with him

Fair enough.

Question though: just how does winning (or losing) happen? Take some time to really think about this.

Damon B, Greg Graham, Calvert C. Let’s put an Indiana stamp on this program by bringing in a former great player as an assistant coach.
BTW in case you haven’t heard it, would advise listening to the POTB podcast of two weeks ago with Greg Graham. A very thoughtful and perceptive guy who really knows the game and learned from the best.
