it was an ncaa championship. it was a not a national championship in that the best teams in the country did not participate. the nit was the biggest college post season tournament at the time and most of the best teams played that over the ncaa tourney. hence. i don't know what a helms championship is

Nope, it was a National Championship, and an NCAA championship. The following year, in 1941 Long Island U.the NIT champ, was recognized as the National Champion.

wikipedia states that the nit championship was the most prestigious post season basketball tournament throughout the 1940's and early 50's. i wasn't around then so i am just recounting the history as i have read it. perhaps wiki is wrong

Yeah, not a good showing at all. We have absolutely no guard play. This was always going to be a throwaway year. Probably next year too. Think Georgia fans would be happy with an average season of like 20-22 wins and an NCAA tourney appearance every other year or so after about year 3. If he doesn't make an NCAA tourney appearance after year 4, I could see the hot seat talk pick up some.
