Tom Allen To Clemson as DC

Yeah, at some point the money is just keeping score.

I'd think the sweet spot would be a top tier OC/DC at a successful program. Make crazy good money without the microscope the HC is under, all while living in a college town/environment and big chunks of time off in the off season.

Rumblings on Twitter that PSU is trying to get Bryant Haines to replace TA. I hope we can match any offer they make him.
Probably the same people who insisted Cignetti would be gone after this season.

Haines will eventually be a head coach if he wants to be, and we’re not going to be able to hold onto him forever, but he’s currently benefiting from the big bump in $ available for IU assistants, and he’s not going to make a lateral move to a program whose head coach has a rep for losing the big games and whose status is less than certain.

This is the moment of truth for IU. Will they try to compete with Penn State financially?

Not sure what the appeal of Penn State is over IU right now other than maybe a slightly higher salary.

One program recruits 4 and 5-stars with regularity. The other one is us.
One program loses every big game they play, and their fans boo the head coach. The other is led by the national COY recipient, beloved by a growing fan base, who is building “an emerging superpower” and will soon be consistently recruiting the aforementioned 4 and 5-stars.

Apparently Haines doesnt need 4 and 5 star talent to be a good coach.

Other coaches get the best team money can buy and get embarrassed at home.
I don't want to lose the guy either, but it doesn't change the fact that, for now, they're still Penn State and we're still Indiana. And there are differences in the programs that go beyond whether we can match salary or not.

"will soon be" vs " already has them and already is"

Gotta say I'm disappointed by the fact whenever Indiana has success, "brands" come in to swoop up our coaches. Hopefully, Byrant realizes Indiana fans are hungry for continued success.
It comes with the territory. Unless someone clearly has no interest in being a head coach and moving on from being a coordinator, then they're ripe to be poached. Penn State just got poached. Ideally, you'd like to lose them to a head coaching opportunity, but whether it is for another coordinator job or for a head coaching job, it doesn't change the fact that he wouldn't be our DC any longer. If he leaves, it's not going to be because of money, IMO.

We'll see how good they are without Warren next season. And we'll see how much longer Franklin lasts. One more season, I predict.

Two programs going in the opposite direction.
Are we talking about a team that was just in the semifinals as headed in the wrong direction?? That's straight outta deluluville.

You're a good poster, Red, but I'm not getting this.

Our past success this century has been limited. Wilson got us to bowl eligibility but had no defense until he hired CTA. Wilson was fired by IU, then hired by Meyer/OSU as OC. He was later hired and fired by Tulsa as HC.

Tom Allen. Took over for Wilson. Two excellent seasons (2019 and 2020) at IU followed by three dumpster fires. Fired by IU, then hired by Franklin/Penn State as DC. Left Penn State after one season for the DC position at Clemson.

Kalen DeBoer. Successful OC at IU. Left for the HC position at non-brand Fresno State, where he had coached previously. Later hired as HC at Washington (great tenure, thanks in large part to the uniquely talented Michael Penix) and Alabama (disappointing season).

Kane Wommack. Successful DC at IU. Left for the HC position at non-brand South Alabama, where he had coached previously. Now DC at Alabama.

What am I missing? Who am I missing? Which IU coaches were poached by what brands?

Part of the price of success.

They had the easiest path to the Final Four of any team in the CFP - - SMU at home and Boise State. Again, we'll see how they are without all-World Tyler Warren. And Franklin, I predict, will soon (within 12 months) resign or be terminated.

DeBoer, Wommack, Penix, & hopefully, not Haines. He's an Indiana guy for Pete's sake!

Yes, but if you're a DC how do you stand out when the last 2 guys had defenses rated #1 & #7? if their D is rated #20 next year, he sucks.

He's getting the same pay at IU and the D is "his", and he's accomplished more here having done it with 2 and 3* players.

If his goal is to be a HC next year, imo leaving does not advance his attractiveness.

F--- Penn $t...

Haines could have the #1 D over there and Franklin would still find a way to choke away the biggest games...

Franklin is nothing if not consistent and there's zero indication he'll ever change... His coordinators are basically just there to be used as a buffer so he can shirk responsibility...

If you're a DC you salivate at being able to coach the kind of physical talent that they are able to recruit that we currently don't or don't in as much volume.

But you make good points about why it might not be a good move. People change jobs for lots of reasons, many of which aren;t surface reasons.

Cignetti or Franklin. In my mind it's not even close. Kurt gave him a job when nobody else would. Easy, pleasy. I'm disappointed that he even interviewed. Maybe Kurt feels the same way.

The main appeal I see is being able to work with better players. He may be thinking "Look what I did with those guys we got to IU. Imagine how great I'll do with better players". Thing is, the grass isn't always greener. The fans on the PSU forum don't even want him. If he goes and his D next year is less than great, he may regret leaving.

Warren is neither the first nor last incredibly talented TE or offensive player they've had. They weren't a one-man team. Hell, they had two 1,000 yard rushers, they're both coming back and they only lose one OL. I'm not an Allar fan, but he improved this year for sure. But still sucked sometimes as well. But the USC and Oregon games were a far cry better than he's played before this year.

Y'all be acting like Penn State is some flash in the pan that isn't routinely in the top 10. Hell, the picture in the encyclopedia of the kind of team the CFP was built for was Penn State...always top ten, but rarely/never top 4.
