Strong Outings from Hart and Cangelosi Lead Baseball to 9-6 Victory over Toledo
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Behind strong starting pitching from senior
Kyle Hart and a three-hit effort from junior
Austin Cangelosi, Indiana Baseball (7-8) picked up a 9-6 victory over the Toledo Rockets on Friday evening. A five-run fourth and three-run eighth for the Hoosiers proved to be the difference.
Cangelosi highlighted IU's offensive production, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Cangelosi also drilled his first home run of the season in the second inning.
Hart put together another strong starting performance on the mound, going eight innings allowing one earned run while surrendering four hits. The senior struck out three on the evening while walking two as he improved to 4-1 on the season.
With two outs in the top of the first, Toledo's No. 3 hitter John Martillotta tripled to set up an infield single by Dalton Bollinger to put the Rockets ahead 1-0.
Cangelosi got the Hoosiers back on track in the bottom of the second as he led off with a home run to left field on a full count to even the game up at one.
In the fourth inning, Indiana's first two runners reached on a Cangelosi single and a walk by freshman
Scotty Bradley. Sophomore
Isaiah Pasteur followed with an RBI single to center to put Indiana ahead. Indiana's two-out approach at the plate was strong, as Krupa worked a walk to load the bases and
Craig Dedelow walked to score Bradley. A wild pitch then scored Pasteur from third, leading to a two-run single by
Luke Miller to make it a 6-1 game.
With the Hoosiers clinging on to the five-run lead, Hart faced a bases loaded with two outs situation in the top of the seventh.
Brian Wilhite, who was strong at the shortstop position all night, made a great play and throw to first to end the Toledo threat.
After Hart tossed a 1-2-3 eighth, Indiana came back to get three more runs in the bottom half. With the bases loaded and two outs, sophomore
Alex Krupa scored on a wild pitch to give IU a six-run lead. Cangelosi followed with this third hit of the night, a two-run single to give the Hoosiers a 9-1 advantage.
A scrappy Toledo squad put together a rally in the ninth. Two errors by Indiana resulted in five unearned runs for the Rockets to trim the lead to 9-6. With two outs, junior
Thomas Belcher came in to relieve sophomore
Austin Foote. Belcher struck out the one batter he faced to pick up his first save of the season and fifth of his career.
Indiana is back in action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. first pitch against the Rockets. Sunday will be a doubleheader with Toledo beginning at 12 p.m.
