Tighten the rotation up..

I'll be shocked if we don't start Green and Durham Saturday.
We need him to play regardless if he starts. My interest is what makes him be a better team player. I believe coming off the bench carries a message that he isn't running the team. The keys have been handed to others and his job is to come in and not screw it up.

Benching him could have sent that message, but he is a player that needs constant reminders. He is due for a good game. He can do that just as well off the bench.

NO we don't, didn't we crush Marquette last year with Green on the bench with yes you guessed it an injury.

So far this season we've seen him both coming off the bench and as a starter. He played best off the bench. I'll give you that most of that competition was weak, which certainly played a part in that. And against that weak competition IU's offense was also more fluid and moved the ball around much better so he got better shots. But he also wasn't trying to force stuff as much. I think the last game off the bench for him was his best game against FSU, who I saw has now moved up to #10.

I've said it in other threads and thought it for a while now, but I would like to see Miller experiment with having him come off the bench the next few games. If he plays better, keep it that way. If he doesn't ... well, do whatever with him because bad Green is pretty bad. If he does play better off the bench, I hope he'd be happy with that rather than upset that he isn't starting.

Different year, different team. That team had two players it could rely on to score a bunch of points. IU also won 5 championships without Green but that has nothing to do with this team.

This team has maybe 1 with TJD (if the guards get him the ball). Smith can score a bunch of points but he can't be counted on to do so since his points typically come in transition and cleaning up around the rim. So the rest of the burden falls on the guards. Phinisee hasn't really scored well at all this year, Franklin has had 1 good game, while Green and Durham are inconsistent. I think because all the guards are so inconsistent, all are needed so one might step up if the others are off. Unfortunately, there have been too many games where they're all off at the same time.

His success depends on shot selection. His shot should be the same against a good team or a bad team. The opportunities may be increased against a bad team, but he controls when a shot is made. He has been shooting when he should be passing.

I am not a fan of jump hooks and runners or floaters. I see a lot of those this year. First they add a degree of difficulty we don't need. Second, I believe we are using them because our offense isn't moving and we aren't getting open looks where we can face the basket and take a proper shot. A jump hook is used when you are being guarded and need to create space to get the shot off. The runner is taken when you see a drive will be stopped short and you can't pull up for a shot without the shot being blocked. Both cases are better to pass than take a more difficult shot.

I agree, but my point was that his shot selection was better at the beginning of the year because the offense was better. Part of that was certainly due to the competition. They just weren't good enough to effectively defend IU. Better players/athletes plus more data points to use for scouting means recently teams have been able to keep IU from getting into a flow. Some of this has to be on the coaches and/or players but the competition is part of it. Some times (4th quarter of Arkansas game, for example) it was certainly on the players for going away from what the coaches wanted.

And against lesser competition he wouldn't have to take any of the shots you mention in the second paragraph because he could get all the way to the basket with little fear of being blocked.

But yes, he definitely needs to start passing more. Or, I should say, start making more GOOD passes. All of the guards do but Green in particular. This team doesn't have anyone that can take B1G caliber guards one-on-one.They need to get back to the movement and passing they had early in the season to get better shots. Green tries too often to go one-on-one or make a spectacular but bad pass. I just think having him on the bench at the beginning of the game might allow IU to get it's offensive play established and then he might come in and continue it. Worth an experiment, at least. Remains to be seen if Miller has the same idea or not.

Blah blah blah blah blah.

Archie certainly cast doubt on who would start. Maybe that is enough to get Green's attention, but there aren't many practices for anyone to prove they deserve to increase their minutes. Unless something has changed, I would expect the five that finished the NW game to start the OSU game. Those 5 showed the most energy and heart. I would use that process for every game moving forward.

It is more important to be on the court at the end of a game than the beginning. Starting is an honor. The players in the game at the end are those you have trust and confidence in. The players that start and finish should be the same 5 in a mature and functional team

Why do people think there will be major changes to the starting 5 the only difference might be a different guard for Green. They got absolutely embarrassed at Maryland down 30 and guess what same starting 5 the next game.

I've just about given up on Green.
Addition by subtraction.

statically...no --not our 2nd best player. Unfortunately...based on stats alone....Smith is our second best player. Which is equally as frustrating. So our lineup is basically TJD and 4 other guys who probably wouldn't crack the starting lineup on most other B1G teams.

I'm still a JSmith fan, and he is clearly the second best player on the team. 10 and 5 nearly every game. IU needs some guards!

Actually, I hope Hunter is part of the rotation if it is shortened. If you go with 8 man rotation then the 8th player is likely someone who has been struggling. So I go with Hunter in 15-20 minute range for a couple of games. If it doesn't work out then go to Damezi or Race. I think it difficult for players to get it going for a couple of short stretches of 2-3 minute intervals.

Miller wasn't known for playing 11 players at Dayton. His best team, his rotation consisted of 8 players. Of course, he didn't have as many highly rated recruits at Dayton as he does, and will have, at IU. At this point in the season I think it's time to shorten the rotation. The five that finished the game against Northwestern should get the most minutes and he'll have to figure out who the next 3, plus or minus 1, will get minutes too. He should base it on effort and performance in practice. That will give every player incentive.

Honestly think we could be a tad better. If Archie quit playing so many guys..Anderson..Hunter .
D. Davis .Thompson..should only see the floor in rare instances..imo
That's big big minutes for TJD and Brunk..But that's all we have up front..
But I was told all last year and offseason that Hunter was going to be the savior. That he would be better than Romeo. You’re telling me all those people were wrong again?

No one said that feepaw. Those were voices in your head. Your mental capacity didn't improve during your layoff. That's unfortunate.

I have been very frustrated with all of the lineup changes. It seems that Miller is just constantly experimenting and there is little purpose to his substitutions.
