This doesn't seem like a good trend

Yeah for the average B student I'm not sure out of state makes a lot of sense over State U with current prices. I have a close buddy whose kid did 12 years of expensive private school them went away to a private liberal school out of state that was expensive as hell. Not Ivy League. Just an average to good college. What's the point of all that expense
I couldn't agree more. Except:

1. An average student today probably gets As for at least 1/2 of his or her grades (grade inflation is real and awful);

2. I will gladly forego retirement to avert my children attending the University of Illinois. Blech. Maybe I should just move to Kenosha, Wisconsin in a few years.

Perhaps, but there are several states with only one good public university (e.g., Illinois). I'd much rather my kid go to Iowa, IU or Michigan State than ISU or one of the directionals. Ohio would be another example.

How much for a wife?

This kind of stuff comes out every so often, and folks express shock that it can cost so much, and state there's NO way they can afford it - and somehow they do. Our son was born in 1991, and we made about 1/3 then vs what we made when he graduated college in 2013 (which cost 5X at the UofMinnie vs what I paid to graduate from IUB in 1985) and we did fine.

But we're VERY fiscally conservative, so we were saving for college before he was born, so we had THAT going for us. If you have a plan and decide to spend within your means, there's a path that doesn't lead to financial difficulties.

Cash money .....

You have one kid or more?
