I like Alford, please give me a legit reason not too. IU would be his best fit ever and I believe he could recruit instate players.

No actually Alford come out publicly and smooth played it saying he loves UCLA. IU is absoluetly courting him.

I did not compile this...it's on another thread:

Alford Resume
-----------------
22 Seasons
10 NCAA
4 Conference Titles (4 Mountain West)
5 Conference Tourney Titles (2 B10, 2 Mountain West, 1 PAC)
3 Sweet 16
0 Elite 8
0 Final Four

* Was 15-17 LAST YEAR
* 2 of those Sweet 16 were with Howlands recruits
* Failed to reach Sweet 16 twice as a 3 seed (Getting beat by 14 seed one year)

The Alford talk is coming primarily from . . . Alford and his people. It may have legs, it may not. But it's being driven from the West.
I believe you Fredrica but Troy Machir on twitter says he has very very close Steve Alford sources and that Steve has ZERO interest. After I sent him the link to the IndyStar article where Steve was doing his best dancing around accepting a phone call later from Fred Glass ... Troy said his source was credible and "it's not my concern what y'all think" .... everyone can find him on twitter.

Personally I think Alford is very very interested in a job that is finally open.

This is his first, last and only true legitimate chance to coach at IU. He probably recognizes that.

I, too, like Alford. But he comes with a $10.5 million buy-out. If we pay him $4 million a season, that means the men's basketball coach pay line in the Athletic Department budget increases 700 percent.
Now, I admit, I don't know the IU Athletic Department budget's condition. For all I know, they have billions of dollars literally sitting around Assembly Hall just gathering dust. But, I've got to believe a seven-fold increase in a single line-item is going to have some fiscal consequences.
Oh, and not to say Alford would be a bad fit or that he couldn't recruit in-state, but, just for the record, Branch McCracken seems to have been a good fit. ;)

He'd recruit the state. Don't know about how good a coach he actually is. I think IU could do better but the IU slanted state media would love it.

I think he would be great because he is a coach that understands the lore and history of the state of Indiana basketball and how IU is the heart of that. He would bring the respect back to the job. As a coach he is just as qualified as any other (or he would have never been hired at UCLA). He would be able to recruit Indiana and the midwest as good or better than anyone IU has had since Knight. He is doing that NOW.

These are the main reasons Crean was fired and he is polar opposite of Crean in reguards to his respect for the position.

BUT..., Donovan would be my first pick.

I am not a native Hoosier but spent my college years there.

My wife, however, is a native Hoosier but does not follow basketball.

She asks me "so who do you think IU will hire"? I went through the top 3-4 names on varous wish lists (Donovan, Stevens, etc.). She had no idea who they were. Then I mentioned Alford.

"Steve Alford? People love him! They would throw parades! I bet people would move back to Indiana just because of that!"

There you have it. An opinion straight from one of the least knowledgable native Hoosiers that you'll hear from. Made me realize how powerful the Alford connection could be in uniting the fan base.

He has Crean's resume without a Final Four, is Iowa's 4th or 5th most successful coach, has been to the sweet 16 3 times in 22 years and never past that round, has made the tournament in less than half of his seasons, and personal baggage that would get a bunch of attention we don't want.

Also, it's "to," not "too."

Your wife's analysis of the situation is absurd. Parades? Moving back to the state? Do you realize how dumb that sounds? His playing career has nothing to do with his mediocre coaching record. We should've just kept Crean if his resume is what people want. 16 year olds aren't going to automatically come here because Steve had a good jump shot here 30 years ago. Hire the best coach. This nostalgia trip crap is annoying as hell.

Uh, you should re-read his post and then consider amending yours.

Are blithering morons

I unfortunately don't live in Indy anymore, so I don't know the local radio guys... but I tuned into 1070 on IHeart to listen to some idiot sying that Indiana shouldn't have fired Crean because there is no one out there that is any better. No mention of Archie Miller, he called Marshall Tom Crean 2.0, said Holtman would be better off ignoring IU because there is no culture like at Butler.

Blithering idiots indeed.

I thought it was pretty clear that it was not an "analysis". Just giving some perspective to those of us that are living in the bubble of these forums, twitter, etc.

That's not completely true. The interest is mutual. Not saying he's the top choice but there is significant interest from IU as well.
