The Holocaust: Required Instruction in Public Schools

@Eppy99

Thank you for sharing. I’m not sure I’ve ever mentioned here my father in law was born in a German Displaced Persons camp. All his family except his parents were murdered in the camps. The pain and anxiety exists today in future generations. At some point I will travel with my wife and kids to Poland but it’s certainly not something we’re looking forward to doing. We’ve actually discussed an event each year that is a bike ride from the gates of Auschwitz to Warsaw. There’s a Jewish Community Center in Warsaw that has a big Shabbat (Sabbath) celebration to celebrate the new Jewish community that’s thriving there in Warsaw. We need a way to move forward without ever forgetting the past. Being with my people to celebrate the sabbath in a place where so many Jews were exterminated is the best way I can imagine visiting Poland.

I'm with you. I've been to the museums and seen enough. I won't even watch Schindlers' List and have no interest visiting the locations. It's too much.

I'm not Jewish so I can't relate to this like you guys. That said, and from my Gentile perspective, while there are a couple of intense scenes in A Real Pain, it's nothing at all like Schindler's List and there's a lot of good comedy in the movie. Here's a an example. Btw, the woman speaking in the scene is Jennifer Grey.

80 years since the Auschwitz liberation

Rod Serling on an epilogue to a great Twilight Zone episode:

The Dachaus, the Belsens, the Buchenwalds, the Auschwitzes; all of them must remain standing, because they are a monument to a moment in time when some men decided to turn the Earth into a graveyard. Into it they shoveled all of their reason, their logic, their knowledge, but worst of all, their conscience.

Tomorrow is Holocaust Remembrance Day.

I'm linking Florida legislation that was passed in the '90s, requiring public schools to provide instruction on "the history of the Holocaust, the systematic, planned annihilation of European Jews and other groups by Nazi Germany, a watershed event in the history of humanity, to be taught in a manner that leads to an investigation of human behavior, an understanding of the ramifications of prejudice, racism and stereotyping, and an examination of what it means to be a responsible and respectful person, for the purposes of encouraging tolerance of diversity in a pluralistic society and for nurturing and protecting democratic values and institutions."

Would similarly worded legislation have a chance of enactment today in Florida and many other states? Too "woke?" Are laws like this at risk of being repealed?

A Holocaust survivor spoke to my kids and classmates in their (not Florida) public school a few years back. The discussion left an enormous impression on my Christian kids, and that's a good thing. As evidenced by my second link, this topic needs to be part of the national discourse, perhaps now more than ever.

And the Holomodor also.
60million +- starved to death by Bolsheviks.

My wife and I watched "A Real Pain" over the weekend. If you haven't seen it, you should. Jesse Eisenberg wrote an outstanding screenplay and Kieran Culkin delivered an Oscar-worthy performance. Very good flick.

Bonus: Eisenberg's character is wearing an IU hat throughout the movie.
Really good movie. The world premiere was in Indy at Heartland film festival. Jesse was out of country but sent a video message . I think he and his wife have a place in Bloomington. He’s there often and goes to women’s bball games. Seems to be a very nice down to earth guy. Screenplay and Kieran’s performance are both brilliant.
