The difference between disagreement and lack of shared values.

Agreed, and it seems more prevalent than at least I have ever noticed before. Each side of the spectrum on almost any issue pointing and painting the other, quick to justify their own. There is as you said, far more common ground that is being suppressed for the sake of "winning" or even demonizing someone else. The task of the next President and congress is daunting but the opportunity of a generation.
Next President's job, you say? Why give up on the last President so quickly? He remains an excellent role model in this venomous political climate, and here's his message on that point:

“This idea of purity and you're never compromised and you're always politically 'woke' and all that stuff. You should get over that quickly. The world is messy, there are ambiguities,” CNN reports he explained. “People who do really good stuff have flaws. People who you are fighting may love their kids. And share certain things with you.”

He went on to call out those who are judgmental towards others who are striving to make a change.

According to CNN, he named “young people, particularly on college campuses” who typically embody an attitude “to be as judgmental as possible about other people. That's not activism. That's not bringing about change. If all you're doing is casting stones, you're probably not going to get that far. That's easy to do."

Obviously, that's sounds a little different than "If you criticize me, I'll hit back harder even if you're right."

I highly recommend reading Nichols entire thread here. He is a sharp guy and I think he pretty much nails this one:

What are you talking about?

And no.

You can read.

Hate speech laws are changing the first amendment. Something that has been with the country since its inception. You can add that to the second amendment which the left would also like to toss in the recycle bin.

Or you can go to Obama's speech linked above. The amusing thing is how much you guys think your shit doesn't stink and that it is always the other guy. And if the other guy says, "hold on a minute, y'all are doing X, Y, and Z" you got a canned comeback for that because sure as shit your other half will roll out the "that's whataboutism". A beautiful world you all have created where you can question the humanity and decency of your opponents all while insulating yourself from any criticism.

An unfortunate consequence of living in your self created fantasy land though, is that when things like Trump happen, you can only double down on that behavior. There is no navel gazing on what you got wrong, nope, it is more demonization of those other folks.

We will see how that works out for you all. Early returns are looking murky. But I am sure you all won't be breaking any norms by again calling for an end to the electoral college or stuffing the Supreme Court should a President Trump get to replace Ginsberg....

Yes, I can read. But if you're going to make a point, sometimes you've got to use the actual words that support whatever point it is you're trying to make.

As far as I know, it's not now and has never been a "Democratic Party" position that the Bill of Rights is an absolutist set of rules. It's always been an obvious given that things like the First Amendment must be construed in the light of our shared reality and that it must be balanced against common interests. It's always been so. That's not to say it's something other than a foundational, fundamental aspect of our Republic or that we shouldn't vigorously defend it from unnecessary intrusion. But when some harm is suffered, it's entirely reasonable and it's entirely consistent with Democratic Party reasoning (to the best of my knowledge) to grapple with that and to assess where lines should be drawn ... even if that's a difficult process. That's where the thinking comes in. As a result of that, there is no singular view from the Democrats on where that line is drawn. It's not a black and white subject.

So when you cite some viewpoint on hate speech without any context and argue that it's somehow anomalous to "everything" the Democrats have said before, no, I don't know what you're talking about.
