Holy s##t. He needs to go this moment but know what should be and what is are different things.
Tracking how the recruitment went, and UConn getting involved somewhat late...I could DEFINITELY see UConn pushing the "offer" a little higher, and Woodson being stubborn about it. There are a number of known dynamics where Woodson has shown himself to be stubborn, even indignant.I don’t think this was over NIL, just look at what our players make, we don’t hold back.
Back when he committed the stories were about a mediocre final visit and Woody just not impressing vs others. Pretty consistent with all the other long run HS recruitments we missed on the past two years.
Concur. His own words in interviews made it pretty clear it was because Woodson didn't have a relationship with him and the offense was offensive.I don’t think this was over NIL, just look at what our players make, we don’t hold back.

You sound like a guy who has made a living in a sales role.Tracking how the recruitment went, and UConn getting involved somewhat late...I could DEFINITELY see UConn pushing the "offer" a little higher, and Woodson being stubborn about it. And, to be honest, I'm not sure I think its an awful stance for Woodson to take. But on the flip side of that, he needs/needed, to be better in his overall approach to build value in the entire IU experience, to insulate better against poacher schools that come in with higher offers.
The next coach, I hope, is very good at building the value in becoming an IU basketball player...THEN, our competitive NIL capabilities can close people.

Then NIL...
I think Woodson has probably just been leaning heavily lately on the NIL side of things...
I have...the closest thing I could find to actual sports coaching and competition...and in the real world, pays quite a lot more. You sound like a guy who has made a living in a sales role.
Yea, it’s quite possible Woody got stubborn. But the benefits of spending another $100-200K of someone else’s money seem too good for Mike Woodson: he gets a top player, it significantly relieves the recruiting pressure/problems, and he gets something to brag about (it’s been a while) vs more criticism. Even if he was annoyed with the ask I think he would say eff it okay. I tend to think it was fit but that’s just my best guess.Tracking how the recruitment went, and UConn getting involved somewhat late...I could DEFINITELY see UConn pushing the "offer" a little higher, and Woodson being stubborn about it. I very, very strongly suspect its a combination of both of these things. He didn't do a good enough job "selling" his program during the recruitment process, and then when Mullins and his Family pushed for some more money near the end...he reacted how an old, stubborn, stuck in his Carmelo NBA days, person would. Especially when talking with a teenage kid that hasn't played a second of college basketball.Yea, it’s quite possible Woody got stubborn. In the end probably needed to happen to help get rid of woodson. The last thing we need is him claiming he has a great class coming in and need another year.
I've talked about my experiences at the Adidas National event this past summer...KKott was there too.I had heard from people that know his dad well that Mullins was IUs to lose and Woodson didn’t prioritize him. I suppose NIL money and prioritize can be the same thing
His track record with guards over the past 2 years is awful.I like Woodson, he is a nice guy, imo. But I really have no faith that he knows who should be getting a lot of money and who should not. This year's team proves that.
it was my understanding that Archie was like this too.I've talked about my experiences at the Adidas National event this past summer...KKott was there too.
I'm pretty a pretty big "body language" guy. And I couldn't have possibly been less impressed with Woodson, and his staff as well, with their "vibe" at that event. Contrasted with that, was basically every other major coach that I saw...up and down, shaking hands with everyone, back and forth from the "pit" area of the lower level courts, to the stadium area of the feature court. Laughing...looking like they might actually enjoy being there and watching basketball. Mark Pope, Shaka Smart, even Izzo, stood out to be in this regard. Our guy...strolled in last minute to games, mainly just in the main arena, sat with his cronies around him, hardly talked to anyone...I'm not sure I saw him watching ANY games other than the IE games, and then they'd seemingly bolt for the back door when those games were done.
I know this is pretty much a universal thought on this board right now, but he just isn't the right person for the job.
And before him, Crean poisoned the well with Indiana HS coaches. Miller was supposed to repair some of that damage.it was my understanding that Archie was like this too.
Smart kids. Both of them. They could see that this whole program was a sinking ship under a captain who has been asleep at the wheel for his entire time here.I very, very strongly suspect its a combination of both of these things. And then when communication and negotiations started to crumble... Mullins and his family had a sounding board family in the McNeeley's, who had likely been through the same exact thing...to solidify their final decision.
Far be it for me to defend Woody but if you read most of that X thread the guy initially stating this as near fact comes right out and says he was just "reading the tea leaves"...
A good rule rule of thumb is always double verify almost anything you read in X... Personally, I enjoy the platform but I never take anything an individual says on there verbatim...
Woodys obvious coaching flaws are what will get him fired, not his recruiting... That Benny Hill Soundtrack accompanied version of a Chinese Fire Drill at the end the game before last should have gotten him his pink slip on the way to the locker room in my book...
Not sure that's what ultimately pushed them away. McNeeley did commit to IU, and Mullins was a heavy IU lean...and IU has been the same program since day 1 under Woodson.Smart kids. Both of them. They could see that this whole program was a sinking ship under a captain who has been asleep at the wheel for his entire time here.
I don't think woody wants high school kids. It takes far too much effort to coach them up. Just buy some hired mercenaries.
Or their parents. I can sympathize.I don't think woody wants high school kids. It takes far too much effort to coach them up. Just buy some hired mercenaries.

He recruits a lot of them though.I don't think woody wants high school kids. It takes far too much effort to coach them up. Just buy some hired mercenaries.
What makes him a nice guy? To me he acts arrogant and aloof. I guess if that's a nice guy you are right.I like Woodson, he is a nice guy, imo. But I really have no faith that he knows who should be getting a lot of money and who should not. This year's team proves that.
That is what they are. They have no love for IU. If Coach loved IU he would coach them up and get involved with recruiting four year players.…buy some hired mercenaries and then don’t coach them either.
Players that want to play for the name on the front of the jersey. That is what they are. They have no love for IU. If Coach loved IU he would coach them up and get involved with recruiting four year players.
Speaking of the arrogance of IU higher ups:What makes him a nice guy? To me he acts arrogant and aloof. I guess if that's a nice guy you are right.
