Tell me this isn’t true…

Is there a chance that with a new coach next season he would reconsider coming to IU?
If not, in the year after by going into the portal?

I don’t think this was over NIL, just look at what our players make, we don’t hold back.

Back when he committed the stories were about a mediocre final visit and Woody just not impressing vs others. Pretty consistent with all the other long run HS recruitments we missed on the past two years.
Tracking how the recruitment went, and UConn getting involved somewhat late...I could DEFINITELY see UConn pushing the "offer" a little higher, and Woodson being stubborn about it. There are a number of known dynamics where Woodson has shown himself to be stubborn, even indignant.

And, to be honest, I'm not sure I think its an awful stance for Woodson to take. But on the flip side of that, he needs/needed, to be better in his overall approach to build value in the entire IU experience, to insulate better against poacher schools that come in with higher offers.

The next coach, I hope, is very good at building the value in becoming an IU basketball player...THEN, our competitive NIL capabilities can close people.

I think Woodson has probably just been leaning heavily lately on the NIL side of things...

Concur. His own words in interviews made it pretty clear it was because Woodson didn't have a relationship with him and the offense was offensive.

You sound like a guy who has made a living in a sales role.

Imagine what Woodson could have done with some basic sales skills.

I have...the closest thing I could find to actual sports coaching and competition...and in the real world, pays quite a lot more.

Sell these kids and their families on the experience. Make them feel what it will be like be a Hoosier. Once you're "on" someone, high school kid or Portal college kid, invest yourself in them. Actually care about them, their families, their goals and aspirations...and begin to infuse your program in to them. Through that process, you'll also get to know them better, and in the end, you'll have a much better understanding who's worth pushing for more NIL for, and who isn't.

Woodson, at this point, is collecting a check. He's leaning on his NBA experiences and days to guide him, and we're seeing the results of that. He has no interest in catering to teenagers, he has no interest in the granular, Tuesday afternoon in August type workouts, that will build his players to be ready for the November practices and games...

Dolson, through his interview process, needs to find someone that he can tell will be invested in these day to day processes. NOT someone that will rely on the NIL capabilities. Use them, but not rely on them.

Yea, it’s quite possible Woody got stubborn. But the benefits of spending another $100-200K of someone else’s money seem too good for Mike Woodson: he gets a top player, it significantly relieves the recruiting pressure/problems, and he gets something to brag about (it’s been a while) vs more criticism. Even if he was annoyed with the ask I think he would say eff it okay. I tend to think it was fit but that’s just my best guess.

I very, very strongly suspect its a combination of both of these things. He didn't do a good enough job "selling" his program during the recruitment process, and then when Mullins and his Family pushed for some more money near the end...he reacted how an old, stubborn, stuck in his Carmelo NBA days, person would. Especially when talking with a teenage kid that hasn't played a second of college basketball.

And then when communication and negotiations started to crumble... Mullins and his family had a sounding board family in the McNeeley's, who had likely been through the same exact thing...to solidify their final decision.
