Spring is here

I'm expecting a bowl season, not a fancy bowl but at least a mediocre bowl. I won't except 5-7 campaigns, it's simply not too much to expect 6-6.

Tom Allen has a great opportunity this season to overachieve and win 7 or 8 games. We're pretty sure we'll field a decent defense with Allen, so that puts the pressure on the offense to perform.

QB will be the key to our season and getting to a bowl. I would like to know more details about MP and his success this spring. The QB position MUST be resolved and it MUST be productive. Trotting out mediocre QB for multiple years running IS NOT acceptable at this level of play.

Awful lot of ? marks still to be answered from a 5-7 team that just lost several key players and rolled belly up in the Bucket game...

I'm hopeful for a Bowl Team and a W in said Bowl for 7 Wins but I'm certainly not "expecting" that result and wouldn't go running around looking for bridges to jump from if a 2nd 5-7 season happened...

2019 is the season I'm looking for a breakout...

Hope my timeline is off and we exceed my expectations this fall...

That’s a lot you “won’t accept” or “except” or whatever. What you gonna do? Head up to be an ND fan instead? Or are you Fred Glass? If not there isn’t much you can do other than stomp you feet in tantrum or move on. Your really not in much position to “not accept” anything unless you want to leave.

There's nothing wrong with setting expectations as a fan. I didn't know it was wrong to expect 6-6 seasons?? It's pretty sad, TBH, 6-6 is the very definition of average.

Expectations are good. Acceptability is a different mind set. Just saying..

I have expectations as well and 6-6 would be in the "at least" category. This is a very young team in many of the skill positions such as RB, QB, DBs. But they have some good athletes there. Can those young kids compete in the B1G? I'm sure they will have their moments both ways. It is going to be a lot of fun to watch them develop under these coaches.

But I will accept whatever their results are because I'm an IU fan and have been for over 50 years, and I have accepted a lot worse than we have now.

One tiny nugget from this is that we are going to be redoing the team meeting rooms in the north end zone as part of the next project (new locker room/players lounge).

The team went to a bowl game with Lagow, so I don’t consider QB to particularly be key. I think that other teams in the Big Ten have trotted out very average guys and won. Wisconsin comes to mind. Outside of Russell Wilson, I can’t think of many great QB’s in their system. Scott Tolzein? Is the next best who comes to mind. I think that Ramsey is average-below average, and I think that they can win with him. Of course, he hopefully improved in the offseason. Seems like a smart kid, coaches son type. So I’m not counting him out. Just based on his natural physical tools/performance/arm strength I see a very average QB. And I still feel confident with him lining up under center because the pieces around him will be good, particularly at reciever with Westbrook, Hale and Timian, all of which could play on sundays in some capacity.

I think the difference is that Wisconsin surrounded the Tolzien’s with superior, deep O and D lines and outstanding skill, highlighted by pounding ground games. I don’t see those as strengths for IU going into the upcoming season, though I hope it can develop into one.

I agree we can win with him. He had a veteran presence about him last year despite his relative inexperience and he made some big plays, particularly in the Virginia game. The keys are 1) staying healthy; and 2) the effectiveness of the OL. I think we're going to see tremendous strides in that group with 2017 starters Cronk, Knight, Martin and Stepaniak all returning, some quality depth, and the addition of center Nick Linder who brings a wealth of experience (26 starts) from a major program. These guys could surprise.

I am very encouraged by R. Jones being one of the defensive players taken as a free agent in the spring draft. LB has been one area of great concern for me and after watching Jones last year I didn't think he had it in him. One of the players, maybe Robinson, also remarked on how well Jones is playing. If he can step up to big time it will help a lot.

I was surprised by that, but not encouraged. It's a bad sign, imo.

Some individuals I'm interested in watching play during the Spring Game are:

#31 Bryant Fitzgerald
#1 Juwan Burgess
#19 Jonah Morris
#13 Isaac James

(All of the above are roster listed as DBs)

#82 Jacolby Hewitt
#17 Justin Berry
#16 David Felton

(All of the above are receivers)

Along with a couple of Walk-On QBs (who may not even get to see the field given the need to get the top three significant reps):

#8 John Pabst and #14 Jake Kellams

As usual, a great article by Andy Graham.

Definitely worth a read...

Really liked reading what Coach Hiller had to say. Here's hoping it transfers to the field this fall.
No kidding the way Hiller was talking is night and day different from last year. Sounds like Ballou and Rhea are making a big impact as well
