Depends on the severity of the storm but I don't loose my signal too much and when it does its usually back in a few minutes. Download the DirectTV app and if you loose signal just open up the app and watch there.

It was happening to me a bunch, but I took my compass outside and checked the azimuth of my dish.
It had been blown off slightly by the wind.
I moved it back and have hardly lost signal since.
You can go into your menu and go to 'signal meter' in 'setup'.
If you are 75% or less, check your azimuth.

I’m not in Southwest indiana (I’m in greenwood), but I was losing signal 2-3 times per week for no reason. Brutal experience overall. They told me it was because of trees in my yard. They tried to charge me $50 to move it, even though they chose the location in the first place next to the trees. Told me a service tech would be out between 12-4, the guy didn’t show up until 8pm. It took about 8 phone conversations to explain all of this, at which point I told them to cancel my contract due to their incompetence. Tried switching me back to ATT at a higher price point, so I ended up just switching to a streaming service. They are trying to charge me $395 now, which I am disputing.

Sorry for rambling and going slightly OT, but I swore to the person on the phone that I would share my terrible experience every chance I got, so here you go.

how often do you lose signal due to rain, and usually for how long?
One of the reasons I dumped DTV was how we would lose signal in heavy rain. We also lost signal in the ice storms we often get. We are located in an area that often has snow begin with freezing rain. It sucks to get out a ladder and chip ice off a dish.

We had a massive storm several years back. Multiple tornadoes were sighted due west of us. As the storm approached town, we lost signal. We could not receive any updates and found out once we got to a radio that tornadoes had passed over our house and touched down to our East and destroyed a neighborhood. Tornadoes a few miles south by the river killed 23 people in a trailer park and destroyed several horse barns at the local horse track,

They also lied to us many times on upgrades to our dishes (yes, we required 2 dishes) and I would never have their service again.

Spray some Pam on your dish before winter.

other than BasketballFan1234, more specificity would be nice. (ie, a couple times a month on average, for maybe 25 mins on average).

i watch virtually everything including sports, other than news, on the DVR.

does the app have any kind of option to watch an IU or Colts game or program after it's already aired. (ie a VOD kind of thing)?

is there any kind of DVR on the app, so i can record there too if it looks like it could rain.

good info on the signal strength thing, though i somewhat suspected that going in.

will be sure to ground/pole mount, (not roof), if i go this route.

i'd heard the Pam thing before, but had forgotten. good info.

thanks

Heavy rain takes my signal out - sometimes for a minute, sometimes for five minutes. But the price is right and I get a discount on my AT&T mobile plan too. All of these companies are crooked corporate America.

so you're saying it isn't out for the duration of the rain?

did it work for anyone in Btown during the Virginia football game last yr? (monsoon the whole game).

If Jerry Hollendorfer was training at the local horse track...might not have been the tornadoes at fault...

It has to be a pretty heavy downpour for me to loose signal. If its just a light steady rain then I have no issues. The longest I have lost signal might be maybe 15 minutes but that is very rare for me. I have lost signal in the winter time when we had freezing rain and too much ice built up on the dish.

Direct recently changes somethings with the app so I'd have to look but I have some movies that I had DVR'd and was able to play them back on my iPad. The Big10 network channel is one that I can watch anywhere on my iPad. I am at work right now and just opened it up to check and it came up fine. There are some stations that you have to be on the same wifi network as the Direct receiver.

The other thing I will do is if the game is on the Watch ESPN app then I will stream it from there using my Direct log in. That is how I have to watch my nieces gymnastic meets when they are televised by ESPN.

If its a nice day and I want to be outside, then I will take either my iPad or Laptop out on the back deck and stream the games via the apps.

The issue for me was losing signal when you needed it the most for weather updates. Beyond the performance, they lied too many times to me.

Agree, when it is really bad weather and it goes out then its a pain but I've owned a NOAA weather radio for a long time and I have it programmed to alarm if we are under a tornado watch or warning. If we are having severe weather then I can also launch the local news app and get my weather updates that way.

I have Dish Network. No problems except thinderstorms or a foot of snow.
