. . . which isn't so much newsworthy in and of itself, except that GA Tech athletics is apparently so vastly behind in the money/facilities race that Tech is having problems competing for talent in major sports these days. The ACC network won't start delivering dividends to the schools for another 3 years, and GA Tech's athletics department is already in the hole because of major outlays for prior coaching mistakes (Paul Hewitt, Brian Gregory), deficit spending by the prior AD (Dan Ratakovic, now at Clemson), and a lack of reliable financial contributions to the athletic program . . . Paul Johnson is on the record of late talking about the football program's facilities woes in terms of "it would be nice to have a locker room . . . ".

The departing AD's tenure has been short (3 1/2 years), and marked by not much . . . he inherited both Johnson and Gregory, and ended up firing Gregory in favor of (!) Josh Pastner at a 50% higher salary ($1.8 million). He left Johnson hanging without a contract extension until Johnson won the Orange Bowl a couple of years ago, and then had to pony up $3 million/year.

One could read the move by the new PU AD (Mike Bobinski) as abandoning a dead-in-irons program in favor of one that has ready cash to do what he would have liked to do at GA Tech, but didn't have the cash for it.

In any case, apparently the guy isn't all that well-liked at GA Tech that they're sorry to see him depart . . . his nickname in the athletic department apparently is "Sasquatch" . . . why? Because nobody's ever seen him . . . .

BTW, Bobinski has ties to the midwest, having graduated from ND and been the AD at Xavier, a non-football school, previously.

Purdue folks think he's a savior, and as compared to Burke, he probably is lol. But I personally think they could have done a lot better and had better candidates that applied and interviewed. He does have experience and Midwest experience, but he came from GT via Xavier, so he's not proven in major college football yet. He's got a big decision to make with Hazzel and who they hire in his place, if they chose to make a change. His biggest hire was Pastner and while he's a good coach, he's very questionable with rules and academics. He will have much more money to play with than he has anywhere, but will he use it well? That's what we don't know.

Time will tell, but this hire doesn't have me "shakin in my boots".
