Sleepers Media guys are saying DeVries and IU might have made the deal during the season long before it ended

I think from what I’ve heard they’ve been talking some since Atlantis. And sounds like a verbal deal was reached a few weeks ago.

Means he wasn't someone who emerged only after everyone else said no.

Dolson did his homework, and contacting a coach under contract (or way more likely his agent) to gauge interest is not to my knowledge illegal, except in the pros, where there are tampering rules. It's not even necessarily unethical. It would be questionable ethics to actually negotiate a contract before an opening exists i.e. Woody retired, but you had better prove that.

Dolson interviewed McCollum twice and DeVries also had an interview at Iowa before an agreement was reached. Not sure who else said no, but the deal wasn't "done" until this week. ~ Per sources.

Conspiracy theorists will say that was just to keep up appearances.

Negotiating the next coaches contract when there isn't yet an opening isn't unethical. Woodson knew they could fire him any day they wanted, and how much money they'd have to pay him to do so.

Now, if they refused to pay the buyout, that would be unethical.

I'm sure they didn't contact him until after Woodson's announcement or not long before. No reason to. Maybe feelers to various agents at the most. May have been enough to be pretty sure you were going to get one you wanted.

But once Woodson was stepping down, Scott had to get moving. It all sounds pretty standard. Scott knows the ethics of coaching searches and almost assuredly followed them.

There's no good way to leave. Was DeVries supposed to tell everyone before it was done or really close? No way. I guess he could've pulled a Bill Frieder and said "I'm leaving but I'll coach WVU through the tournament." ;)

Or perhaps a verbal deal was reached just before Woodson “decided to retire.” And that was announced on February 7th.

Impossible, because he was like 10th on the list after everybody else told us NO!

A interview isn't an offer....or even an enticement. Being butthurt doesn't make it rise to that level, either.

Who said anything about an offer? Im only pointing out that there was no decision made before this week. I can extend Dolson BOD on why he picked DeVries.

OT, "butthurt" is a dumb adjective, and not a word adult men should be using.

These guys have agents. All the initial talks are coordinated through agents and university reps. Dolson and Devries weren’t meeting face to face leading up to the past week or so.

I thought I heard he talked to Iowa, so much going on the other night, hard to keep up.
Think I saw that he told them no, or turned it down... but that could've been through an agent or intermediary. Who knows and who cares. After weeks of not knowing, we have our coach and I like what he's said so far. I'm going to enjoy a few weeks of the tournament and enjoy that the search is ove and sounds like we have a good hard-working bball coach.

Sleepers guys are clowns when it comes to IU. I think they have a large PU following, but their schtick is to needle IU at every opportunity, and admittedly, there's been a lot of ammo and they've been dead on about CMW for most of that time. They are conspiracy mining for clicks.
