And as I said, I don't think anyone on your "can't miss" list is a realistic possibility.... maybe Pearl, but expect a career type extension at Auburn whenever he chooses... unless he really is interested in the IU job. Beard's career path makes perfect sense when you look at it and isn't a red flag unless you're looking for one. Regularly moved up to better jobs, until MS and obviously he had to take a step back at that point and already has them winning. The fact that he's moved up with short tenures to me explains the lack of conference championships. I think Pearl and the coach who shall not be named are dreams, Oats is the next step down and Beard right behind him. But again, if Oats and Pearl aren't realistic... Beard is a great candidate. You prefer him or Cronin?

Big Time AD's know that basketball is just something to keep the fans engaged in the winter before Spring Practice comes around... FOOTBALL is where the real money is at... The AD's who don't grasp that are amateurs...
It's $18 million just to buyout Oats on top of paying him another $40-45 million over the next 6 years. IU isn't going to sink $60 some million dollars into a basketball coach after investing in Cignetti with revenue sharing about to kick in starting in July. It just isn't going to happen. Oats is going nowhere for the next two season.
Oh I would support him too! Just would have a back of the mind worry that his past issues would resurface...and we all know how IU would likely react to that if they did.
Guys like Beard. lol What kind of guy is Beard? What kind of person is his ex-fiance? She's a volleyball coach so probably might be pretty intense herself. %%$# happens. The incident at Texas is a negative but I don't see Red flag or history of this behavior.
I think the only Red flag is he says Tamar Bates is one of the best players in SEC. We experts know differently. I don't care if they hire Beard or somebody else but I'd take Beard in a heartbeat. Actually my guess is Beard's personality would be an asset.

UK couldn’t get Oats to even engage in their last search. It was a very quick “no.” I doubt we look any better to him, and that buyout is huge for basketball.

There are probably a decent number of Power 4 unproven guys that would also be in the double category. Grant McCasland, is showing he can win at Texas Tech right now, so he might actually become much more proven by the end of the year.
Every single person on the list above, I'd be excited about...with the exceptions of Cronin or Bennett.
To my point that I've made many times...there are a lot of quality coaches out there. And I haven't even dug much deeper in to more coaches, like McCollum, that are cleaning up in lower D1 and lower college levels.
Will Wade needs to be on that list. He's better than everybody not named Stevens, Pearl, Oats, Otzelberger, and Beard.

Yes, that is a lot of names of good coaches or at least candidates for consideration. Starts to thin down by nearly half when you look at guys who might be realistic candidates. Your top 4 I don't believe are, nor is Bennett, Drew and I doubt Kelsey. Same with Barnes (if you're talking Rick?) and Altman. Golden has active and open questions. So, yes, you can list a lot of names of good coaches, but not nearly as many realistic candidates.

Right, wrong, or indifferent...Domestic Violence is a completely different animal. I haven't really read up on the Wade stuff, to be honest. But breaking NCAA rules about paying a player, a few years ago...while it was illegal...does seem less questionable now that NIL is around.
I've come up with roughly 20 names that are off the top of my head, or quick google searches cross referencing the current AP rankings. Even if only 20% make it through all the filters, and are viable... I just found 4 of them...me...through google...with probably 2 hours of total thought and research put in to it.
What is a search firm, a handful of people who's entire job it will be, and people that have deep connections in the coaching community going to come up with?
I do think the top guys, the ones everyone else knows about without having to research anything...are ALL unlikely. But every time I dig in to it, I find more guys. Grant McCasland at Texas Tech...another name worth looking in to, stumbled across him. Danny Sprinkle... Jerrod Calhoun... Follow programs that have hired and lost good coaches to better schools...that's a sign their AD's have a good eye for coaching talent. So many of them out there.
He was (at James Madison)... Their now retired AD was some kind of savant...
There's plenty of baggage surrounding Chris Beard. All one has to do is read the police report....it's public record. It's not the DA's fault the gf who was assaulted decided not to cooperate after the fact. Beard is lucky he's still coaching college basketball at all right now.
I don't have to read the police report (although I have). I know enough to know I'm 100% certain there was an altercation that night. Beyond that, filing charges is up to the victim, LE and the DA, and they didn't do it. I'm steering clear of a situation involving someone who's divorced, and in an argument where likely both parties were drinking and a teen or adult child is also in the mix. That's a lot of drama and emotions and I'll defer to the parties involved and not guess about what happened. They conducted additional interviews I believe with both parties and she ultimately changed her story, so he's innocent in my view and the law's I believe.
As I've said all along if he has a history of alcohol and violence, an investigator will find lots of other incidents from traffic stops, to police complaints, fights, restraining orders, DUI's etc.... If none of that exists and it truly was isolated to this one event and you talk to him and believe he's made changes to address it, I'd have no problem in hiring him, and think it would be wrong not to. JMO, but we've elected someone as President who's done worse, so yes, I beleive in giving the guy a second chance under those circumstances. If there is a history, then I agree, steer clear.

Victims of DV, especially of the felony variety, don't get to decide if they want to press charges or not. That's completely up to the DA. Now, not cooperating with the prosecutor's office and changing your story as a witness certainly makes that decision easier for the DA as it costs time and money to go trial, and no DA is going to go to trial for a DV case without a cooperating witness, but charges weren't dropped because the victim said so. Not how domestic violence laws work and why domestic violence is still so prevalent in today's society and why many cases go unprosecuted. It's an ugly cycle and unfortunately a terrible societal issue.
Right, so the DA looked at the evidence, and decided that in the context of her wanting to drop the matter, and whatever other physical evidence or other testimony there was, it was insufficient to prove that a crime had occurred. So there was no charge, no trial, no conviction. Therefore Beard is presumed innocent of any crime. Agree with kkott, we weren't there, people who are qualified and authorized to investigate the matter decided to drop it. If there's no other history of a problem, let the man move on with his life.
So what did Texas see that after an initial suspension, made them go ahead and show him the door.
OK, so assuming that is indeed a genuine document, they decided to make their own judgement based on the presumed truth of the inital reports, disregarding that parts were later recanted and determined by the authorities to be unprovable in a court of law. Their right to determine their standards for employment, and to require a lower burden of proof than is required for a criminal conviction.
At this point, in retrospect, unless there's other evidence of an ongoing problem, it doesn't seem to be disqualifying to me. Ole Miss apparently thought so. IU may disagree.

Indiana is a basketball school always will be its time to spend the money especially with a good football team making money. To get Pearl or the top guys 7-10 million a year is about what I expect. The offered Stevens 7 years 70 million.

Dumb. Football is where the money is at. Pour money into football and basketball can ride the coattails of success if you find the right coach.
Having charges of felony domestic violence dropped against you shouldn’t be the basis of which you’re hirable or not.
All for him moving on with his life, doesn’t mean IU needs to hire him.
None of those guys are leaving their current gigs to coach IU. It’s not 1990 anymore.
Beard could have sued for breach of contract as he was owed close to $30 million had he not been fired for-cause. Instead, he went quietly into the night. We all know why…charges being dropped doesn’t excuse his abhorrent behavior which almost certainly would have been further dragged in the public eye had he pursued litigation.
More or less yes. Texas didn’t need a criminal conviction to conclude that Beard’s behavior warranted termination. Everybody around the situation realized the charges were dropped because his girlfriend decided not cooperate with the DA’s office, not because there was evidence to exonerate him.
Really I would beg to differ money talks. Big Ten is a weaker conference then the SEC plus NIL at Indiana is huge for any coach that takes the job.
You’re on drugs if you think Bruce Pearl is leaving Auburn to coach Indiana. Look at how many coaches turned down Kentucky last season. There’s nothing Bruce Pearl could accomplish at Indiana that he couldn’t at Auburn. You’re in for a rude awakening if you think IU is going to hire a Tier A coach here in March.
