Wow seems like #11 has turned into Indiana's most notorious number. Isiah who was best player ever and somewhat controversial in the NBA. Then we have Dakich and Fife . Hell even Jadlow wrote a book. Just adding a little needed levity.

Just on some other numbers and best.
3 Edwards
11 Isiah
12 Alford
13 I don't think Anyone ever wore 13 in RMK years did they?
20 Wilkerson and Graham and for other reasons Sherron Wilkerson
21 Buck
22 Bailey
23 Smart on one game alone
24 Wittman
25 Guyton
30 Kitch
31 Laz add in his announcing days

No, but it should be reserved for PGs who separate themselves from the pack.

Rayl wore 22, and i think maybe Archie Dees now JG

Tom and Dick VanArsdale wore 25 and 30 iirc, all time IU greats

i think Abernathy was 33, .

Yeah Ab was 33 , I was more referring to another 33 . Ab was a good player but not a great in my mind . Other ones I have forgotten or before my time. Bird likely wouldve had a different # than 33 at IU

Rephrase as if hire #11, who's doing probably if not much, little. bored Of course. he doesn't need to, but if bored, what a better hobby than let Woodson and him brainstorm with Bobby ?

At the rate things are going Fife will be the most hated man in Indiana by the end of the day so probably retiring number 11 is not going to happen. Heck Fife may never be able to step foot in Indiana againt the torches are coming out for him and fast at least on this board.

What's going on around here? No #34 Steve Green or the other Steve (Risley).... Tapak

Dang, I forgot Brian Evans wore good ole #34 as well. Who else am I forgetting?

John Ritter was my first fave as a babe. another great #42

If you retire a number, it can't get better with age.
I'd rather see them used. A future number 11 could also be awesome and we would never have more excellent number 11's if we retired the number. One dude's opinion. Go Hoosiers!

It was a TIC thread more about #11's seem to garner more controversy than any other number so taking it out of the rotation. I hate retiring numbers. I am a Celtics fan and they are running out of numbers. I hate seeing strange numbers myself. They should put the name on the number they hang and let it be worn. Celts will be using letters at some point.

What a tragedy that was, his mother killed in an auto accident returning from an IU game late at night.
I never heard that story . Sounds like a lot of tragedy . Saw RMK was a pall bearer at his mom's funeral, stories of Kirk Haston, AJ Moye ,Mike K at Army and of course Landon when tragedy struck one of his guys. RMK could be an ass for sure but not sure how many coaches put the time in like he did when they needed it.

Left Eric Anderson off my list RIP, we have lost too many guys way too young. Steve, Eric, Daryl Thomas .

Jason Collier, William Gladness, Neil Reed, James Hardy, Daryl Thomas, Anderson.

Before Steve Bouchie died, he had lost a son who was a 2007 IN All-star and only 29 at the time of his passing.

I remember Knight called up an IU baseball player to walk on at the last minute due to some player losses and he actually played some game minutes during the season, scoring a bucket or two. Can't remember his name for the life of me but I can still picture his face. He was a guard and was killed in an auto accident in southern IN a few years after he graduated. I think he was the first player of Knight's to die at the time.

There was also the tragedy of Luke Recker's girlfriend, the auto accident in Colo. that paralyzed her for life and just about severed Luke's ear. This happened the summer after he left IU.

I had forgotten some of those and a few I never knew. Is there more tragedy at IU than other places? I worked at Dave Schnell's parents house after he signed on for football

I think Purdue's been relatively unscathed. Well, they did have the Daryl Stingley football tragedy, but that was after he turned pro. Iowa had a real popular and talented forward, Chris Street, get killed during his senior season...his car his a snowplow. He had an ongoing string of 34 straight made free throws at the time of his death, an Iowa FT record.

Steve Bouchie's is a sad story above and beyond extending outward . Always wonder the toll things take. He looked like a grizzly bear specimen physically .

A burly farm boy with kinky hair. He seemed quiet in a well-disciplined way. He had his place in Knight's system and fulfilled it well. For his service, we will be forever grateful.

Not really a fan of retiring numbers.

Seemed about 30 as a freshman, I miss when basketball had a place for those guys. Kitch was a farm boy too, maybe not quite as much . Bouchie in HS probably just was able to so dominate . Those guys were tough as nails

IU football used to have an All-American lineman named Carl Barzilauskas who went on to play in the NFL for a number of years. IU fans got really excited when his son, All-State huge player, Bo, decided to play for Coach Mallory. Well, before it could happen, Bo decided he was burnt out on the game of football. You can Google his name and come up with a 1994 article in Sports Illustrated Vault, in part...

A year ago his father, Carl, who also played defensive tackle for the Hoosiers—and later for the New York Jets and the Green Bay Packers—acted as Bo's drill sergeant while conducting football training sessions for a dozen or so high school players on the 60-acre family property outside Bloomington, Ind.

The 11 weeks of training, which took place for three hours, five nights a week, included drills of digging trenches, climbing ropes, flipping railroad ties, carrying a 200-pound log two miles through the woods and dragging a 300-pound Chevrolet engine block down a gravel path. At the beginning of the training, in late May, Bo could pull the engine 36 feet. By the end, in early August, he could pull it more than 700.

The "outside of Bloomington" reference was actually Brown Co, where the last I heard, Carl still lives on a farm here. Your "farm boy" reference made me recall this story...another IU "tragedy", similar to that of Martinsville quarterback and IU signee, Earl Haniford. Anyway, I got sidetracked and this is probably fodder for old timers on the other board.

BTW, my mother was a farmer's daughter...halfway between Preble and Magley, IN off of HW 224 was the acreage. I like farmers. It seems like a wholesome life...hard, but rewarding in a wholesome sort of way.
