joe hillman wouldn't be bothered in public except for by hard core iu fans over 50Still one of my favorites if not favorite. Scored 40+ ppg in HS; changed his game entirely under Knight. The definition of effort - undersized but fought for every rebound in site - just loved his game. (Probably good to give him peace as he probably gets bugged a lot!)
Dope. You wouldn't know Joe Hillman even if he came up and slapped your drunk ass across the face.joe hillman wouldn't be bothered in public except for by hard core iu fans over 50
or really drunk people?joe hillman wouldn't be bothered in public except for by hard core iu fans over 50
And why should we care?I probably told this already but took a basketball referee class at IU with Joe. 7:30 am class. Joe was in his 5th year.
Douchebags wouldn't!And why should we care?
I looked a lot like Joe in college and same height. He probably had 5-10 lbs on me. I played against him several times at the HPER, and never had to guard someone so far from the basket. He wasn't a shooter in games, but he could light it up at the HPER out to NBA range. Loved trying to cover him.I probably told this already but took a basketball referee class at IU with Joe. 7:30 am class. Joe was in his 5th year.
that's interesting, lucy used to get confused for Granville Waiters back in the dayI looked a lot like Joe in college and same height. He probably had 5-10 lbs on me. We had a guy in our dorm from CA who had played against Joe in HS and he did a serious double take when he came walking in to a mutual friend's room. For some reason, he thought I was doing a bong hit at the time, and thought I was Joe.
More than likely kurt was so smashed he probably thought he saw the van arsdale twins as well. Its called delusionals of grandeur. Being smashed most of your life will lead to confusion and imaginary visions that do not exist. I only hope drunk kurt did not go up to the fake hillman and make a total fool of himself. But he probably did.Dope. You wouldn't know Joe Hillman even if he came up and slapped your drunk ass across the face.
Sober up yet or you still smashed?that's interesting, lucy used to get confused for Granville Waiters back in the day
I'm 44 and I recognized him immediately.joe hillman wouldn't be bothered in public except for by hard core iu fans over 50

Oliphant, I think they old announcer told that story every time Jeff would come in for mop up minutesWas it Hillman or Oliphant that had the legendary games of Horse with Alford? Or Both? I know Oliphant only played 1 year with him, but for some reason his name popped into my head when thinking of those HORSE stories.
Oliphant! When I was in Elementary school during the summer I went to Christian camp up by dyer elementary and for the last month of the summer we did the olympics. And competed against other camps in about 20 different events we had four coaches Jeff Oliphant Steve Ely and two lady’s from the swimming team I can’t remember their names. But a couple of times throughout the month they brought different people in and Alford was one of them and they talked about playing Horse at the end of almost every practice and Alford rarely won! Still one of my favorite childhood memories! Was it Hillman or Oliphant that had the legendary games of Horse with Alford? Or Both? Oliphant had a few good games in him. He wasn't a total flop by any means. He was built thick and solid. Running in into him has been compared to running into that of a shit-house made of bricks. Jeff made the sacrifice. He remains a Hoosier. When we laugh at him we laugh at ourselves, knowing we couldn't do it any better and that's why it's all meant in fun.Oliphant, I think they old announcer told that story every time Jeff would come in for mop up minutes
Douchebags wouldn't!
It's an interesting tidbit and I think he's saying it was impressive that a 5th year senior was still taking 7:30am classes. I know I wasn't!
That was a great story tiny L&M with like 130 kids in the school. Jeff went to IU Tony Patterson went to Purdue and they had another really good kid. Sports illustrated did an article on them I think ESPN was there for a game. They were ranked like 1 or 2 that 84-85 season. Couldve been a great story and was actually. Ended up losing in semi state finals that yr. I think Jeff had a lot of injuries at IU.Oliphant, I think they old announcer told that story every time Jeff would come in for mop up minutes
Kind of like Kitchell in North Central Indiana name?Oliphant had a few good games in him. He wasn't a total flop by any means. He was built thick and solid. I run across that Oliphant name here and there in southern Indiana and always wonder if one might be a relative of his. The Oliphant seed appears to be of good scatter, disseminating as it has across Southern Indiana's Norman Upland and Mitchell Karst Plain, continuing westward through the Crawford Upland.
I'm sure he's heard his share of elephant jokes through the years...Oliphant, the elephant at Halloween and "Hey, Oli, what'cha doing?"... things that might scar a psyche into the later years. I mean, he seemed pretty easy going during his time here so I imagine he's survived the taunts that continue to this day.
Their varsity coach got ran out of town after the '82 season and ended up at my HS in '83. They address that in the SI article that came out and he was in similar situation with us, but ended up lasting through '88, I think. Maybe '89.That was a great story tiny L&M with like 130 kids in the school. Jeff went to IU Tony Patterson went to Purdue and they had another really good kid. Southridge. Southridge played Austin in the first game. The game lasted forever as probably 40 fouls were called, and Southridge won easily and rested their starters. The second game was L&M vs Evansville Bosse, and Bosse was very good. The game started about an hour late, and lasted longer than normal. I believe the score was about 83-81.Oliphant was often seen around Walnut Knolls parties.
Once while visiting friends up at Purdue, I was shaving next to a guy in the bathroom at Tarkington Hall. As we got to talking, found it was indeed Oliphant’s HS teammate, Tony Patterson.
The L&M story in SI was a very good one. Who beat them in the Semi-State in ‘85?
Southridge had a big goofy white dude that year.Southridge. Southridge played Austin in the first game. L&M got very little rest between games. It seemed like their shooting was with tired legs, as many shots that were normally made ended up short, and Southridge won the game. L&M was better, but lost. L&M, IMO, had enough talent to win the state. Class basketball could have been avoided (probably not)if only that would have happened.
And a small enrollment compared to the Richmond/Marion state final game that year.Southridge had a big goofy white dude that year.
And Jay Edwards as a freshman right? Funny after my last post reading this from small town story my dad's mom ended up in Richmond and huge town for one schoolAnd a small enrollment compared to the Richmond/Marion state final game that year.
Similar thing happened to my hometown team while I was in elementary school. Union High School in Dugger played against Terre Haute North or South for the regional championship in 88 or 89. 2 games in one day for a team that isn’t very deep is a leg killer. It was a close game but still a loss.Southridge. Southridge played Austin in the first game. true. But Southridge is always very good in football and baseball. Same county as Jasper. And a small enrollment compared to the Richmond/Marion state final game that year.
I have to say I remember Scott Skiles in 83, Plymouth was a rival. Unfortunate he had his issues. He would have been great at IU. I could see doing Fri Sat for sure that was too much to ask . Didnt Alford score 57 in the first game of his semi state and thats a lot to ask to come back from in a few hrs, but damn semi state and state was some great tvSimilar thing happened to my hometown team while I was in elementary school. Edwards and Jones were sophs on that team. Nikki Mallory was the starting PG and they had a big dude in the middle whose name escapes me. Looked it up and it was Jay Teagle at center. And Jay Edwards as a freshman right? sober or smashed... in the little time I've been on this site I've noticed many might make more sense smashed
what is wrong with you? is that all you think about is my drinking? your hated here your hated on the cooler, Are you jealous? You dont want 25 people posting gibberish like kurt at 3 am. He would be awfully tough to top though he is in a class by himself. Sometimes if he is on a bender its several nights in a row.
