Russia and Ukraine

Contrary to popular belief, Republicans and Democrats do NOT differ much on Russia/Ukraine.

Despite Tucker Carlson and his ilk spouting Kremlin propaganda 24/7, Republicans are just as likely as Dems to view Russia as an enemy and Russian aggression against Ukraine as a threat.

Perhaps Repubs are more likely to view Russia as a threat …recalling OBama vs. Mitt when Obama essentially blew off Russia as an issue from the 1980s. I think this talk irritates Putin as a matter of respect…personally and diplomatically.

Well......

I read the article.

1. Turkey is a NATO member so this whole "North Atlantic" nonsense is hot garbage
2. We don't have anything approaching the coordination of NATO in the Pacific and while I understand his point about China it almost feels like a strawman argument
3. Calling Europe and Russia a "secondary theater" seems dismissive of the problem
4. This letter appears to be a complete break from the Republican party of 2008 and pushing in all his chips behind Trump.

Neocons salivating; "US to deploy troops to Eastern Europe as tensions continue between Russia/Ukraine "US will soon move approximately 2,000 troops from Fort Bragg in North Carolina to Poland and Germany this week. Roughly 1,000 Germany-based soldiers will also head to Romania

Liz is very excited I am sure.

Interesting. I'm the opposite. Started left and moving farther and farther right as I age. I'm always amazed how similarly educated people who have largely shared the same upbringing can be diametrically opposed politically

Stories about AOC and ted Cruz and MTG get more shares on social media than those about Biden - by a wide margin. Crazy is winning
Don't "shares on social media" = age 20-30?

Few in that age group would ever acknowledge (as by liking or sharing) that they pay attention to someone who looks like Biden.

Ageism lives !!

Kasich? Oh my God......
Trump !! Oh my Godder !!

Jeez DANC, learn to spell !

I am still trying to figure out what AOC has done to be put in the crazy category. I understand disagreeing with her policy opinions but policy opinions isn't something that makes one get the crazy label. That would be the behavior that is reminiscent of a 6th grade bully.
Haven't you heard?

AOC is a Democrat and therefore, according to the GOP, probably a Socialist and Communist, too. (So is Putin, but the GOP likes him, so he doesn't count.)

No member of the Squad will ever be nominated for President.

The biggest problem with Trump isn't who he is, but how Republican voters reacted to him, and the main flaw in reflexive both sides-ism is a failure to recognize that Democratic voters have not exhibited the same dangerous behavior to such a worrisome extent.
The biggest problem with the GOP is they thought the electorate had become so ignorant that it could no longer understand the Republican virtues of morality, family values, strong national defense and balanced budget etc.

So the Republicans went back to middle school, preaching gossip, attacking Democrats and, irrationally, screaming Socialism and Communism like Joe McCarthy (who died 65 years ago).

I can understand Republican nostalgia for Lincoln, but these guy are preaching nostalgia for Joe McCarthy. Why should I ever vote again for another Republican when they won't get back to their values?

The only good Communist is a dead Communist

Is it your turn again in the barrell tonight, or are you tag-teaming it with Hickory?
Wow.

I embarrassed you by suggesting that you learn to spell, and you responded with "barrell."

Could you please provide us with a definition of "barrell"? I bet you don't even realize what you did wrong.

Barrel. But you're the one in it, so you'd know how to spell it.

Whenever the populist right and the communist left agree on something, you can bet your bottom dollar it’s a cursed, hare-brained and un-American idea that would result in catastrophe and ruin.

I'm not sure where this fits in this discussion but here's a good article about Russia and Ukraine, opining that NATO's overreach is at fault (too):

Xi absolutely does not have the balls to detain a US athlete during the Olympics.

Athletes shouldn't be afraid to speak the truth

I spent some time in Kiev around the time of the upending of the last of the Russian supported governments. In fact, the 100 martyrs were shot near my hotel on Kryschatic (sp?) during one of my visits. No doubt the population will go underground and be willing to be martyred for the future in spite of the past. Freedom has a ratchet effect..The farther west the Russians drive ..the stronger the resistance. The Russians have already co-opted the native spirit by absorbing the “Caves”...an Orthodox religious site that was sold slight of hand to to the Moscow Patriarchy . Enriching who?
Hard to say how it plays out…my generation says ..learn how to swallow. it can’t be worse than the past. The next generation of Ukranians say ”hail no”…my bro’s, my sissies, my lovers …etc died at the end of those Russian rifles that day. NOT GOING BACK.
I was in Kiev during the orange revolution and several more times over the next four years. It was apparent to me that the east side of the country was still longing for the Soviet days while the western side of the country wanted democracy.

Unfortunately, Kiev is located in the dead center of the country so the politics there are intense. I lived in Kiev for about 6 months and i would attend soccer games on Sundays and some pro basketball during the season. I avoided the hotels by staying in rental apartments.

What's with Hawley? Isn't Putin, a former KGB colonel, a really bad guy? Didn't Putin describe the demise of the Soviet Union as "the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the [20th] century?" Isn't he committed to expansionism, with a desire to rebuild the Russian empire as his legacy? Isn't Russia our enemy?

talk about a giant misunderstanding getting totally out of hand.

i have been personally assured by Vlad himself, that none of these soldiers are going to invade Ukraine.

they just want to peacefully tour Ukraine and take in the sights of Kiev, like any other tourists.

he added that perhaps they'd like to tour the US Capital Building as a group as well in the future, preferably during a presidential address to both branches of our legislature, so they can better understand our system and see such a beautiful building from the inside.

the whole world should feel pretty stupid for totally misreading this.

what country doesn't love tourists.

Something came down the intelligence wire that has them spooked it sounds like.

There are some fairly definitive statements being made on our side...one of those "hope they aren't true" type of things counterbalanced by "but they need to be true or we look kind of dumb" type of things.

This is not good.
