RIP Jimmy Carter

Saw that. Never miss a chance to take a dump on a traditional recognition of a deceased President, I guess.

The flags were at half staff for Nixon’s 1973 inauguration. Truman died the day after Christmas 1972. LBJ died two days after the inauguration so all together the flags were at half staff for nearly 60 straight days.

Hats off to Abbott, I am not offended by raising the Flags to honor the Messiah!

Just another step in the attempt to remove decency from our national dialogue.

This seems like a very unimportant thing. I'm guessing 99% of the population didn't even know about this tradition.

I think we act too much like former Presidents are former monarchs or something. For example, I don't think anyone should be called President but the sitting one.

I'm sure it's more important to guys like Aloha. I'm certainly not losing sleep over it. But Abbott made a choice. Between acting, and not acting, he chose to act, when not acting would have been the decent choice.

Decency went out the window years ago. Ironic that that's confirmed by disrespecting our most decent President.

Biden’s a bad guy. He doesn’t deserve a lick of respect. Same holds true for trump. Clearly. They occupy these roles to sate their narcissism. I can’t imagine raising or lowering a flag for either of them. I wouldn’t for W etc either. Generally agree with brad on presidents

He drank Billy Beer! Probably shared in the profits if it was profitable.
I always thought he was a non-drinker like Trump, but it looks like he rarely drank and not never drank. He would toast with white wine at dinners.

favorite drinks of every president

Lincoln and Trump do have one thing in common, no alcohol

TIL Grant was a lightweight.

Update on half staff protocol for 1/20/25:

Seems reasonable.

I always thought Carter was a good person but very naive when it come to dealing with foreign countries.

Always thought, down deep Carter was a pacifist so using our military might as leverage in foreign affairs would be alien to his basic instincts.

To most of us in a world where military might is essential any signs of pacifism definitely comes off as naive.

I despised Carter as president, growing up on a farm and the Russian grain embargo was a disaster

But with time I realized he was at least in part a victim of a lot of bad luck with the economy. Then the Iran hostage situation did him in royally. It took decades before we found out about the backdoor deal Reagan had set up to assure that there would be no hostage progress until well after the election. I loved Reagan and still appreciate many things he did, but wow was that dirty.

Dirty, but probably didn't happen. Most definitely not a fact and almost certainly false. Both sides of Congress investigated and both found there wasn't sufficient evidence to support that conspiracy theory.

Follow through to sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1980_...ise theory,American hostages detained in Iran.
