Amen, your comment reminded me of John 20:30-31 which is actually the purpose statement of the whole book of John. 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

There's a lot of history there -- some of which preceded FDR's presidency. But basically it just came down to political and resource control in the Pacific Rim -- especially Southeast Asia (Philippines, Indonesia, etc.) and Oceania. Japan has always been strapped for natural resources and they were setting out to address that.
I do not think it's right to say that FDR provoked Japan into attacking us, really. Or at least that would be an oversimplification.
They obviously felt threatened by our presence in the Philippines and elsewhere in Asia and there were dueling embargoes -- first from Japan against Chinese imports of US military supplies and then from the US against exports of oil to Japan. This was a massive provocation. Japan got 80% of its oil from US producers.
Japan considered invading Philippines in response to the embargo. But they decided on the surprise attack instead, because they believed they could cripple the US Pacific fleet.

Carter was a Southerner who carried the South, continued to live in the South, and was still very well-liked in the South.

However, he did have confidence in himself. Confidence due to his accomplishments at the Naval Academy and then being selected by Admiral Rickover over hundreds of candidates to be part of the Nuclear Sub program.
Then Carter surprised even Rosalynn by running for the State Senate and becoming Governor. His run for the presidency at great odds was nothing short of miraculous. His demeanor and humility (lack of ego) apparently appealed to voters at that particular time.
The rest is history.

Who voted for Carter in 1976 has nothing to do with what the south is like in late 2024. MAGA dominates now and they aren’t exactly known for civil respectful behavior towards Democrats, even towards Presidents and former Presidents.
Even twitter was mostly respectful about Carter's passing. Most of the stuff I saw was people decrying Trumps statement as selfish or some other jab. I think you let this MAGA garbage cloud your judgment about the majority of people.
Carter was a very generous and charitable individual in his private life. He gets props for that.
In his official duties he was a disaster and did lasting damage, not just as president but with his post presidency also. His suggestion that some US elections should be under UN or international supervision was ignorant, malicious (because the GOP won) and left a mark. He took to the grave his belief that the Russians put Trump into office.
To be fair, it's not surprising that Trump was the one former president who found a way to mention himself in his statement.
Carter was wrong to believe Russia put Trump in office, but right that Russia tried to influence the election in Trump’s favor. Our intelligence agencies, Mueller’s investigation and the Republican led Senate Committee all agree about Russia’s efforts to influence, but none say the influence put him over the top. It is harmful that Carter said it did. It casts doubt on the integrity of the election, but I’d say it didn’t have a huge impact there.
Trump’s actions and statements about the 2020 election being lost due to (nonexistent) voter fraud is far more harmful in decreasing confidence in our election. To this day, a plurality of Republicans believe him - even though Trump doesn’t even really believe it. There is some real long lasting damage there - and it’s intentional.

According to the link the U.N. and Carter Center were joined by several world organizations which endorsed the principles.

Yes, I listened to Dan Carlin's entire four part series on the rise of Japan and causes of Pearl Harbor. But, FDR did not take the Japanese seriously (similar to many others during that time period) and made continuous moves that pushed Japan further towards conflict and imperialism. FDR gets far too much credit and not nearly enough criticism for his unprecedented reign.
They were both wrong and both bad. And I don’t see as much difference between them as you’re suggesting.
