This has been something animal rights activists have been calling for for years, but NIH has finally started to prioritize human-based research technologies.
I'm not an expert on what types of animal experiments are actually necessary or useful, but I do know that most of the techniques and research happens because the funding keeps coming. Most of these experiments are cruel, brutal and unnecessary, so stories like this one are a major step forward. Kudos for pushing this over the finish line.
Full disclosure moment here. I used to work for a group out of DC dedicated to ending cruel animal research. Some of the smartest doctors I know are the ones who present on human-based research technology worldwide. I'd meet regularly with doctors and researchers across the country who worked at top universities and healthcare systems who advocated for this as well. I feel confident in saying that modern technologies has evolved to a point where cruel research doesn't need to take place.
