Veteran reporter Rick Bozich talks about the Indiana coaching search; are there more names we can eliminate? Probably. Is anyone moving to the front? TJ Otzelberger had his buyout reduced to $4 million. Penn State in town as well.
Why wouldn’t he be coaching?I thought Greg Gard was an interesting name. Almost certainly won’t be him but very possibly a name from left field. Although Kent Sterling says they already have their guy which would mean someone not currently coaching.
So you want to hire a 63 year old coach that has spent his whole career in the east and got out of coaching due to NIL changes. No thanksI would build a statue of Dolson myself if he somehow talked Jay Wright out of retirement.
Yes, thank you.So you want to hire a 63 year old coach that has spent his whole career in the east and got out of coaching due to NIL changes. No thanks

“Carved from the sands of the Wabash River and formed into a monkey man that’s sold at the Home Goods.”I'm sticking with Indiana Sports Connection. Hillbilly Monkey makes more sense.
Come on Jim. I love you, but when the first response is from dbm, it’s bad news. Just start a real post. Tire of all the BS. Make sure you feel the same about these low level guys who have never recruited a top 50 kid, like say, Ben McCollum. So you want to hire a 63 year old coach that has spent his whole career in the east and got out of coaching due to NIL changes. No thanks
I would like to know what "already has their guy" even means here. And that is based on what? Not buying that.I thought Greg Gard was an interesting name. I appreciate the love, but am unclear what you are saying. I cannot control who responds and when. There is also at least a month before this comes to a close. So why not talk about the possibilities? How is that not a "real post" and how is it close to being Doyel?Come on Jim. I love you, but when the first response is from dbm, it’s bad news. I know nada about the ins and outs of a coaching search, but that's what I think as well; it's a logical conclusion. If Dolson does, in fact, have his guy locked and loaded--in February--it doesn't make sense that it's a current coach.Kent Sterling says they already have their guy which would mean someone not currently coaching.
A random 63-year-old coach is one thing ... a 63-year-old Jay Wright is a completely different ballgame. So you want to hire a 63 year old coach that has spent his whole career in the east and got out of coaching due to NIL changes. No thanks
I apologize Jim, but I did not pay enough attention that your post was Rich Bosich thoughts. I did not listen to the broadcast. Then I saw someone respond that Kent Sterling said IU already has their man. I assumed it was more BS from someone trying to just get more crap out. I really do appreciate your insight. Once again, my apologies.I appreciate the love, but am unclear what you are saying. I cannot control who responds and when. There is also at least a month before this comes to a close. I think the shift to having a GM role will start keeping coaches around now. Wright would be a pipe dream , but after 25 years of mediocre at best , just hope we don’t repeat. So you want to hire a 63 year old coach that has spent his whole career in the east and got out of coaching due to NIL changes. That's part of Hubert's deal at UNC.Hire a GM to run the office and handle the NIL deals.
@Jim Coyle He said a high level booster that he trusts immensely told him that at the Purdue game Sunday. See the video here the last minute.I would like to know what "already has their guy" even means here. And that is based on what? Not buying that.
Cignetti is 63 and he looks like he can coach another 15 years.A 63-year-old might not make sense to you, but keep in mind that Bennett is 55.
No worries, easy to get stuff mixed up here. I greatly appreciate you!I apologize Jim, but I did not pay enough attention that your post was Rich Bosich thoughts. I did not listen to the broadcast. Yeah, I am not buying this at all. Too much that has to be done and to get all of that accomplished in a week, in-season? I am just not seeing that as a possibility, and I do see the next coach as someone who is not currently coaching unless it is Tony Bennett. He could be a player here. The NIL situation that he didn't want to deal with at Virginia would not be an issue at Indiana. A - they have the money, B - the coach will have virtually nothing to do with the payouts.I know nada about the ins and outs of a coaching search, but that's what I think as well; it's a logical conclusion. While most were psyched about the possibility of Dusty coming to Bloomington, it never made sense to me on several levels. Logic led me to that opinion ... and logic is leading me here. I might very well be wrong, but, imo, it's sound logic.

Yeah, nothing against Kent, but If this were true, I would expect it to come from Pete Thamel or the Star first because those are the two places IU would "leak" the info to. And for Dolson already "having his guy" and "got it done" says to me that the person is not currently coaching. That would most likely Be Tony Bennett, who is someone that Joe Hillman mentioned when he was on with me a while back.@Jim Coyle He said a high level booster that he trusts immensely told him that at the Purdue game Sunday. working it.Anything new new from that source since your podcast?

I think you missed the point. Jay Wright hates what college basketball has become and doesn't want to deal with retooling his rosters every season with guys looking for paydays.Hire a GM to run the office and handle the NIL deals.

Maybe he’s changed his mind. After some time off maybe he prefers coaching over work in a TV studio. Or maybe not.I think you missed the point. Jay Wright hates what college basketball has become and doesn't want to deal with retooling his rosters every season with guys looking for paydays.
This doesn’t have to be. See Matt PainterI think you missed the point. Jay Wright hates what college basketball has become and doesn't want to deal with retooling his rosters every season with guys looking for paydays.
@Jim Coyle this is from the Sporting News on Beard. Not a clickbait news source. Is this the article you were referencing with Bozich this morning?Veteran reporter Rick Bozich talks about the Indiana coaching search; are there more names we can eliminate? Probably. Is anyone moving to the front? TJ Otzelberger had his buyout reduced to $4 million. Penn State in town as well.
Joe Hillman tossed his name out the last time he was on with me. Obviously, he is a quality coach. But I don't know about a guy who quits as the season was about to start? Strikes me as fearful.Hmmmmmmmmmmm.....Tony Bennett......now there's a name that's not been thrown around much. 56 years old in June. I'd be all in. I'm prepared to be bored anyway. McCollum is one of my favorites.
I'm sure he didn't just say, "Screw it, I'm done." Could be something personal. Who knows? But "fearful"? Of what?Joe Hillman tossed his name out the last time he was on with me. That is pretty much what he said, more or less. He did not name personal reasons. The following is from the AP upon his announcement.I'm sure he didn't just say, "Screw it, I'm done." Could be something personal. Who knows? But "fearful"? Of what?
Fair enough. That is pretty much what he said, more or less. He did not name personal reasons. The following is from the AP upon his announcement.
Describing himself as “a square peg in a round hole,” a tearful Tony Bennett said Friday he suddenly retired from coaching at Virginia because he wasn’t suited to navigate the current landscape of college basketball. Bennett told those gathered at his exit news conference that name, image and likeness money and the transfer portal have brought elements to the job that he’s “not great at.” “I looked at myself and I realized, I’m no longer the best coach to lead this program,”
That doesn't sound like a guy who is ready to go out and beat the world.
Yeah he wouldn't do well in this job. That is pretty much what he said, more or less. He did not name personal reasons. The following is from the AP upon his announcement.

Agreed, unless a GM type of role would be created to handle that stuff. But still, it would be a risk and it sounds more like he just realized "I'm done."That is pretty much what he said, more or less. He did not name personal reasons. The following is from the AP upon his announcement.

I hope one of Dolson’s “requirements” is NOT the type of tempo the coach is said to run. Hopefully not even in the equation.Bennett can coach and fits alot requirements besides the tempo he runs. He has won big at Washington State most wins in school history and won a national championship at Virginia.
