The list of players staying in crimson/cream is headed to 0. Depressing. Exhausting trying to get to know 12 new players every year. This staff needs to build some continuity and establish culture in the program.

Unfortunately that's the way college sports has gone. Hopefully in the future we can keep some players that are here more than 1-2 years.

We kept plenty of guys for multiple years recently...and we'll continue to do so next offseason and beyond under DeVries. We changed our coaches, and from all accounts, the two guys couldn't possibly be more different from each other. Losing most/all of our current guys was always going to happen.

Just read that over 1000 players have entered the portal!

What is the process when a player enters the portal? Can a school contact the player or does the player have to initiate the process?

Good question. I am more interested in the role that the boosters have in building the team, and managing the program and the players that they are paying.

Schools contact the player (their agents). Some players put a "do not contact" tag on if they know where they are likely going, though I would guess schools reach out anyways.

With the exception of one year of financial gain, these players were done an incredible disservice by playing for Woody at IU. I hope they go on to fulfill their potential at their next stop.

Now when will our Mark Pope, Pat Kelsey roster rebuild start? Will it be the 1st week of April with Connor Enright?

I would be surprised if it takes that long to get a portal commitment. But maybe? Seems like he'd get at least one other WVU kid before then? Hansberry maybe, Stone maybe... Harris maybe... Sounds like Powell isn't an option...

From what I can tell, boosters basically just commit to some amount of NIL and all the program/player (including NIL per player) decisions are the coaching staff.

Which makes sense if a booster puts money into a pot, and it gets allocated to the players by someone else. But, that’s not how it always happens. Jimmy PF could be getting 500k from Chiles (and they aren’t signing checks to anyone else), while Billy SG can be getting 750k from Adobe (and that is the only Hoosier they are sponsoring). One player can be getting his check from one owner, while another player can be getting his primary check from a totally different owner.

Luke Goode, Bryson Tucker? Those are the only two I really wanted to come back and as far as I can tell both are still in play.

Almost all of IU's NIL is pooled $ into a pot controlled by the coaching staff. Sometimes Adidas is involved, but they just care that the player goes to an Adidas school.

There is no ownership, players just get NIL to enroll at IU for a year. NIL has no control over the players beyond an appearance here and there around campus.

In the end, it's effectively the coach's call on the player and what they make.

In rare instances where there is real NIL, like say Caitlin Clark, I didn't see any reports of those companies trying to push her to a larger program. I guess they could try, but it would be awkward and it's not really worth their time.

I hope things work out for Rice. He seems like a good kid. Overcoming cancer was obviously impressive. Woodyball did him no favors. He can be pretty darn good if he can find the right program fit.
Agreed, good luck to all who leave. Let's build a team of players who wants to play for IU and not just for the money.

If entering the Portal isn't a guarantee of a player leaving, and equates to nothing more than shopping their talents around for a better payday, why wouldn't every player do it, every year?

In the business world, any employee would do the same -threaten to leave in order to get a raise. The only thing in the real world that holds people back is the feel of reprisal.

I agree Woody did him no favors.

I disagree he can be pretty darn good. He can't pass or shoot.

Everything I've seen indicates that Goode is unlikely to get a waiver.

I'm not as high on Tucker's potential as others, but he'd be #2 behind MR as players I would not mind seeing back next year.

I think this one phrase might be the most beautiful thing I've ever read around here!

To rid ourselves of the previous culture with a brand new one is glorious. Sometimes in order to eradicate a terrible culture, you have to start with a clean slate. Hoosier Nation embraced the last group of mercenaries until it became apparent that they valued self over team. I welcome seeing a bunch of brand new faces, all locked in to a new culture vs. trying to erase bad habits learned by the previous bunch.

heard rumor that MR is heading to Georgia. Has close ties (recruiting) to one of the assistants. People thought he would be getting a big payday at the U, but their program is a complete train wreck right now.

Depressing? Refreshing I say. Most of these players were not very good and got paid a lot to be good. Woody gets some blame for sure, but the players just stunk it up.
