No mate this is simply a matter of confirmation bias where you are twisting yourself into a pretzel because you and someone you respect share a like opinion, in spite of the vast majority of contrary opinions yielding much simpler and straightforward Occam's Razor style explanations. I have reviewed hundreds of papers without a payment for doing it. You can get royalties from contributing to book chapters, but that isn't much.

You do get paid a token amount for reviewing NIH research grants. That's an all day thing though. $200/day. You never review 1, it's usually 4-5. Then you hear about and comment on grants reviewed and scored by others.
