Ranking college basketball's underappreciated coaches

I will stand corrected, but I believe IU had stepped up dramatically with assistant coaches salaries, starting with Wilson and continuing with Allen. Are they OSU or UM level? Of course not. But I believe they're now competitive with most B1G schools.

Just as a reminder, Crean was a Greenspan hire, not a Glass fire. That said, in some people's eyes, Glass will never live down the Crean extension. Yes, he got caught up in the "We're Back!" frenzy, and got taken to the cleaners. Then cutting him loose before he did became a problem; early on the buyout was huge, and then in the last few years Crean always seemed to put together an over-achieving team. From any realistic perspective, it would have been hard to justify firing Crean any time before he was.

Will give Glass credit that he expanded the pool from the Bill Lynch era, but Indiana has lost several key coordinators and assistant coaches to other programs. Not saying efforts haven't improved but I still don't think IU is pot-committed.

People that think Archie wasn't a good hire are fools. Those that think he should be fired now are fools. If this season goes into the tank we can start considering whether he should be fired. I have a lot of confidence that Archie is still the right coach for IU.

I have never understood the hatred for Glass. IU sports overall have been doing great and the facilities are all being upgraded and I think hiring Allen for football and Miller for basketball were great choices.
Glass’s 11 years:

Basketball:
0 Elite 8 appearances or further
4 NCAA tournaments...FOUR

Football:
0 winning seasons
2 bowl games

What the hell do you not understand?

I was never sold on Crean and think Glass should have fired him at least a year earlier so I see that as a negative for Glass. But overall I've liked what he's done at IU.
You loved Crean for many many years.

You are correct. I disagree about his teams overachieving because I think they were underachieving teams. I include the Sweet 16 team in that.

Poor choice of words on my part. Can't come up with one that describes a team that does very well but falls short of the very best. That team didn't under-achieve particularly... but they didn't know how to deal with a facking zone, that's for damn sure. Not gonna lay that on the kids.

It's on Crean and that's why I think he underachieved. I couldn't stand for the lack of defense and turnovers most. It was not the kind of ball I like to watch.

The better question is what does he understand. It’s a short list.

Of course, we will never forgive Coach Tom Crean the loss to Syracuse when we all expected the sixth banner out of that team, but I’m curious as to what do people think would redeem him: a national championship with Georgia, or is he forever tainted with losses?

One benefit, and there weren’t many, of having Crean for nine years was that we were able to see what he was capable of with the resources of a top tier basketball program. Georgia is going to be a tough four years and out for him.

Crean is on a better trajectory than Archie.

Crean is full of hope and optimism for a struggling program w a strong recruiting class.

Archie is losing favor and recruits because of two low performance seasons...and has lost the ‘new coach turnaround’ momentum.

My guess is Crean will be coaching at Georgia after Archie is finished coaching at IU.

I couldn’t disagree more with your statement and reasoning. We know what Crean can do, which was my original point. Unfortunately for him, “hope and optimism” only gets you so far with people. Archie has landed two Indiana Mr. Basketball’s with his first two full recruiting classes without hope or optimism.

Hey! Let’s bet on whether Crean or Miller remain as head coaches for a longer period. I got $50 on Miller. We do the payout with Venmo so the worst thing you have to worry about in terms of your anonymity is an email address. We on?

Who do you think will have more Big Ten titles at IU? Archie or Crean?

My email is on this site all the time on the ticket forum (it has been for almost a month until this week) and some of the other sports teams forums.
I often give away soccer, volleyball, and women’s basketball tickets.
I also often sell a football game or two that I cant make for a very fair price.
And occasionally I’ll sell a basketball game as well...which Ive been more willing to than Id hoped over the last two years.

I have no interest in betting $50 on that - but I’d buy you a beer at a football game if you are correct that Archie is coaching at IU still after Crean is finished coaching at Georgia.

Crean is Georgia's problem now.

...Any redeeming qualties?

Who said I don't think it?

That's 1 more bowl game and 2 more Sweet Sixteens than the previous 11 years before that
And somehow that’s good enough.

Glass was hired only 6 years after our basketball team was in the title game. He’s completely run basketball in the ground. Possibly the worst AD in the country in terms of football and basketball program success.

Crean just led Georgia to one of it's worst seasons in the past twenty years...worse than any season Fox had, and that was with being given a first round draft pick in Claxton along with another high four star point guard in Crump.

Now he brings in 4 wings and that's supposed to be some source of optimism?

Again, Edwards will be another one year 18 year old Merc and like Romeo will be gone.

Archie missed the tournament by one game and now has flipped his roster to almost a full stock of four stars...at multiple positions.

Crean will be lucky to make it to the second round of the SEC tournament...the only tourney he'll probably play next March.

The stupidity on the free board is entertaining but the takes are still stupid.

I would love for Glass to be fired terrible AD. Archie after this season will probably be fired after we go four straight seasons, not in the tournament.

Anyone who thinks Miller is getting fired after this season, barring a Crean like 3 win-last place conference finish needs their straight jacket adjusted.

There is no Brad Stevens 30 miles up the road in waiting to be picked like there was for Crean...and we still didn't fire Crean after a year three where he won 3 conference games and finished last (and I was feepawing for it at the time).

Its Georgia - a winning season is an achievement.
Their fans will love winning 50% and watching NBA talents come and play a fast paced fun offensive style of basketball.

He also has a very solid grad transfer guard to go with those highly ranked wings(I think)...

Never said that either.

But you sure have had a lot to bitch about over 22 years. You should perhaps move on and get over it.

Get over what? Get over my desire to be better? Get over my standards that are higher than Glass’s record of basketball making the tourney 36% of the time? What exactly should I get over?

Or he gets it going like Knight thinks he will and you find other things in life to be douchey about...
