If true, is it unusual to have several popes resign in such a short period? I thought it was for life.

Several in a short period of time? Pope Benedict, nine years ago, was the first to resign in 600 years. Francis, if he follows suit, would be the second.
Canon law allows for papal resignations, and I hope Benedict started a trend. 85 is too old to run a power tool let alone a global organization with over a billion members. Francis appears to be in failing health, and kudos to him if he recognizes it's time for someone else to lead the Church.

It ended up being a little back heavy (Dad put a larger motor on it than the original design called for), so he is in the process of moving the battery to the bow and possibly adding some dead weight up there.
For the record, this is the second time he built this boat. The original design came from a magazine that he bought for 25 cents when he was 19.

He's not a political leader**. Some may perceive what the Pope does as purely political but, like most religion, it is often used by those with political power.
**No more so than a Supreme Court Justice anyway.
