Seems to me the question of whether using AI or not shouldn't have been necessary in this case -- using bogus references (AI generated or not) should be enough to dock the student.

Seems to me the question of whether using AI or not shouldn't have been necessary in this case -- using bogus references (AI generated or not) should be enough to dock the student.

Admittedly skimmed this, but there are two distinct issues:

1) should AI be allowed in schools - seems like right now, schools or districts have their own authority to decide if this is true.

2) was the students grade lower because they plagiarized vs used incorrect or inaccurate information? Maybe I just missed it, it the parents likely have a leg to stand on if the student received a zero or failing grade simply for plagiarism (as it sounds like they have a case that usage of AI didn’t violate the school’s policy - not saying I agree, just acknowledging they have a chance).

However, if the kid got a D (for arguments’ sake) because they included false or wrong information, there is zero reason that argument has any merit. The kid was simply too lazy to fact check or verify the accuracy of what they pulled from AI, for which they have zero case IMO.
