there are 2 kinds of leaks.

one is a leak of information that otherwise wouldn't ever come out.

the other is a leak of information that is going to come out anyway, at a latter date.

the latter is what we have here.

the latter is usually done to control the timing, or the impact, or both, so that when the information does become official, it's impact is lessened by the leak, and the fact the info came out in parts rather than all at once.

in parts is better for those wanting to limit or lessen the impact. (an offshoot of the boiling frog thing).

when it's done to control the timing, it's usually done to increase the time between when the info comes out, and some future event said info might have bearing on.

the greater the time between the release of info and the future event said info may/will/could have bearing on, the better for those wanting to minimize said impact of the info on said future event.

i'm guessing the info was leaked to both minimize the impact of the info itself by getting it out in parts instead of all at once, and to maximize the amount of time between the release of the info and the Nov elections, thus reducing the impact on said elections as well, as much as possible.

So, if you believe a fetus has the rights you describe paramount to the rights of its parents, what rights do you agree a 4- 5- 6-year-old actually born person has to legally demand to be vaccinated against childhood diseases paramount to the rights of its parents? You can't have it both ways.

Reading all these posts it sounds a lot, an awful lot, like the conservative/Republican recognition of parental rights (or not) is inconsistently applied and totally depends on politically motivated issues (i.e. can we get Candidate X elected if we scream XYZ about abortion).

I believe a parent has all sorts of rights when it comes to their children. Those rights end at a certain point though. We all agree on that. We don't tolerate abuse and we don't tolerate homicide from parents against their children.

Cerebral palsy. She went to a home when she hit adulthood. My aunt and uncle just could not do the lifting and moving she required anymore. She should have never seen the light of day either. I know the daughter my wife miscarried wasn't a clump of cells. Only girl my wife had and we never got to meet her.

I grew up attending a fairly conservative Christian church, so I’ve known many people who felt this way and I believe they, and you, genuinely feel this way, so I am not going to try to change your mind. I don’t think it’s fair however, to assume everyone shares this belief. I believe life begins at birth, not conception or somewhere in the middle. I believe abortion should be safe and legal. If I thought it akin to murder, I would certainly oppose it in all instances and I’m guessing most people would.

Your assertion that the country is “morally bankrupt” also seems an exaggeration to me. Abortion in some form has likely always existed. Unwanted children were discarded in dumps often enough in the Roman world that they were considered a good source of free slaves. Abortion didn’t start with Roe v Wade and it won’t end if it is struck down.

And miscarriages are a terrible thing. I feel for you on that.

I believe a parent has all sorts of rights when it comes to their children. Those rights end at a certain point though. We all agree on that. We don't tolerate abuse and we don't tolerate homicide from parents against their children.

Let me repeat that, we don't allow parents to kill their children. We don't allow it if they aren't ready to be parents. We don't allow it if they just don't have the funds. We don't allow it if they are in a bad spot with their mental health. We don't allow it if they have school to finish. We don't allow it if they are scared their child may pass on some disease to them and cause them to die. We don't allow it if they feel that breastfeeding their child makes the child a "parasite". We don't allow it.

So this is not a "both ways" argument. It is a really consistent argument.

I am going to moralize a bit. This country is broke. Just morally bankrupt and the position that the country finds itself in is reflective of that. This is a narcissistic, self indulgent, hateful place. "But, but conservatives XYZ..." Did I stutter? A narcissistic, self indulgent, hateful place. And maybe that is just human nature, no, I am pretty sure it is human nature. Responsibility is hard. Deferred gratification is hard. So we choose the "easy" path. Boy has that path been great for us. (DWS in case that was not clear.)

So in answer to a few questions above. I support a social safety net. Sometimes stuff happens. Sometimes we have people in society that are not going to be able to care for themselves like a "normal" adult would. I have a son like that. A piece of the genetic puzzle just didn't click right for him. I will do everything I can to help set him up for when I am gone. Conventional wisdom from many of you would say he doesn't deserve a life. Too expensive, a drain on resources...he's a really sweet kid though. I had a cousin who passed away a few years ago. Cerebral palsy. She went to a home when she hit adulthood. My aunt and uncle just could not do the lifting and moving she required anymore. Her home neglected to monitor some things and she died of an infection. She never could talk. Loved listening to music, would get super upset if anyone said bye. She should have never seen the light of day either. I know the daughter my wife miscarried wasn't a clump of cells. Only girl my wife had and we never got to meet her.

"Abortions aren't fun for women..." Well, the sane ones at least. You want to know why? Because deep down we all know that is a person getting killed. When my wife had to get the D&C with the miscarriage, all the talk went from baby to "fetus". People think that makes it feel better. It didn't. You can try to lie to yourself that something else has happened here, doesn't make it so.

40 million people snuffed out before they ever got a chance. And why? Because some of them weren't going to be like you and me. So they were dehumanized and killed. Some of them were going to be a burden. So the easy path was chosen. 40 million potential stars just snuffed out. 40 million sons and daughters. Brothers and sisters. Future Moms and Dads. Really good post. I obviously disagree on the overall topic but you made really, really good points on your perspective.

Thank you also for sharing your tragic miscarriage story. My sister had one before my niece and nephew were born. She told me it made her feel broken.

The reason for posting was because of your miscarriage story. When (and I believe it's inevitable unless the Dems do something politically scary like kill the filibuster....a couple months before the midterms that aren't looking so hot right now) abortion becomes illegal. How do you ensure that you can distinguish between a miscarriage or a self abortion? I'm sure it's unlikely in your or my sister's case since they are married but.... technically they both could be found guilty of an abortion going forward.

Again my biggest concern is the lack of confidence in contingency planning, starting with the acceptance and support of those other options on the menu you listed.

But it's been discussed already enough so I'm not looking for/expecting a reply.

This admin is broke. The party is uncommon sense broken. Do the opposite of what needs to be done. Why do you still get its back. It bends you over and hammers you at every turn.

This is a rough and tumble place and the topics are often hot-button issues, so name-calling - - at least to some extent - - is to be expected. I'm certainly not without fault. But there are levels, as you suggest, and the venom that comes out of some guys' devices is troubling.

I get one of those at least monthly from McMurtry (and I know, despite his denials, that he reads everything I write - - lol). But demonizing people just completely blows my mind. A few days before Easter, indianaftw told me I was going to burn in hell. This Hoopsier guy calls me "subhuman." They know next to nothing about what kind of person I am and how I live my life, and yet they've determined I'm evil? Seriously, wtf?

I've got to say, there's plenty of name-calling from the right, left and center, but I only see this "you're evil" shit from the Trumpers (with COH, to his credit, a clear exception). I guess that's what makes me evil - - I oppose Trump. Holy shit.
