Pete Hegseth Secretary of Defense

Life is complicated is a difficult thing to say about a group who sees it is stark black and white. With no gray, there aren't complications. Pretty much the theme of modern conservatism is there is only black and white.
As opposed to modern progressives who see black, white, and gray, and all of them can identify as any of the others at any time.

Yeah, the complexity he was referring to was just that he’s a conservative. That’s all that really matters.

It is like how Musk was once an evil elite scamming the government for subsidies, now he's not at all elite, not at all evil. But Tesla still lobbies for things that most Republicans dislike. And I don't see complaints about putting an evil scammer in charge of government waste. For him, government waste IS anything that helps petroleum. Fine by me, we'll see what others think.

Musk himself has been a big proponent that AGW is real and needs addressed.

That’s correct. The SDEF’s job seems to be two big things, dealing with Congress and budgets and dealing with contractors and procurement. Hegseth has no experience with either, but if he is a good leader, that what staff is for. Some SECDEF’s have played different rolls in strategy. Given the total Afghanistan administration fvck up, i think Hegseth would be an improvement.

Being an outsider could be an asset. But yeah, I agree his experience is atypical.
LBJ had Robert McNamara. Look how that turned out.

“Hegseth has said he left the military in 2021 after being sidelined for his political and religious views by an Army that didn't want him anymore.

‘The feeling was mutual - I didn't want this Army anymore either," Hegseth said in his book "The War on Warriors: Behind the Betrayal of the Men Who Keep Us Free."’

His bio which I read yesterday says he’s still in the National Guard and is a Major. That won’t last long if true.

Yep. Hegseth is an outspoken conservative and he holds two Ivy League degrees. Life is complicated. Ya gotta think your way through it.
:)
I wouldn’t call him a conservative, he’s more of a MAGA zealot. He may not be confirmed.

Can anybody be MAGA and not a zealot?

Hegseth has a single-minded view of the military’s purpose which is to kill the enemy and destroy their war-making assets, and always be prepared to do so. He doesn’t include fixing climate change or overcoming our history of slavery and racism as a military mission. A very interesting pick. He might not be confirmed but the debate he will cause needs to happen.

I'm considered a warmonger by some here because I see the military's focus as to defend the country and fight and win wars if it comes to that. Fixing climate change or overcoming our history of slavery aren't part of the military's mission. The mission statement is pretty simple - "to provide the military forces needed to deter war and ensure our nation's security."

You have a very unique way of taking an obscure point and exploding it into an overriding principle.

Musk has said he is okay with ending EV subsidies. Even with that, the story of how musk nurtured EV subsidies is a model of efficiency.

As far as Space X is concerned he treats government like a customer as if he is selling materials to build a bridge.

Star Link has the opposite problem. The Biden administration refuses that technology in its grandiose plans for rural internet because of Musk.

He wants to end them now that competitors in the market are the ones getting them. It’s just pulling up the rope.

Maybe he doesn’t view the guard as the army.
Technically, it's the Army National Guard. One of the two sources is wrong. I'm not certain how his political and religious views would get him "sidelined" or know what "sidelined" even means. He evidently wasn't discharged from the service, and he wouldn't be unless political and religious views resulted in misconduct of some type. That confusing sentence may just mean he decided to concentrate on politics and religion and resigned. Or that he just didn't get activated for deployments any longer, but I don't know how a person would take himself out of the rotation without resigning from the service.

IIRC, we’ve had one of CIC’ who said climate change is our most serious national security threat at military academy graduation ceremonies. Also that DEI is important for readiness.

Good grief.

First WTF is “modern” conservatism? Nothing has changed.

Second, there are some decisions which are in the binary world of black and white and others that have infinite shades of gray but will require a black white decision at the end.. A conservative knows the difference when it comes to ideas and policy. A liberal only sees black and white when it comes to people. Everything else results in an infinite loop of processing like that little circle thingy on a computer screen.

Don't put the leftist spin out there and pretend it was 'the right' or 'conservatives' saying it.

"It is like how Musk was once an evil elite scamming the government for subsidies .. "

Yeah, to the left... To the right he is an amazingly successful entrepreneur. The left somehow spells 'entrepreneur' with only four letters.

Are you going to say "Before, Trump was Hitler! Now you guys like him!" LOL

The classical right would prefer to not have government picking winners and losers with subsidies. You are correct about that. And many would ##### about Tesla subsidies. But those same people are also very sure that Elon Musk would be highly successful even if no subsidies was the playground.

How much 'lobbying' does AIPAC do? You have a problem with Southern Poverty Law Center's lobbying activities?

I have no problem with anyone lobbying, Musk has that right. I am not one who yells about the swamp but forgives the swamp creatures they agree with.

Musk is smart, he knows certain things very well. I'm not sure he knows everything. I am sure among his greatest skills is how to make Elon Musk wealthier. But the anti-swamp people don't seem to worry he will work inside government to that end.

He is a successful entrepreneur, no doubt. Were you here when Tesla received a $465 million loan from the Obama administration? There were a LOT of complaints from conservatives (well, a lot from one and some from others). Why doesn't that make Musk a swamp creature? Or an elite?

Musk is, like most people, more complex than his newfound nor former zealots want to admit. He plays the system. He isn't going to stop playing the system because he is inside of it. He is very bright, but maybe like the guy from the Titan sub implosion, maybe takes too many risks. He is convinced we will have a self-sustaining colony on Mars by 2050. That only happens with incredible risks. He isn't an angel, he isn't a devil.

Probably wasn't here at the time, but if I had been I would've been one of the major complainers, yes.

But, that's just Musk playing in the sandbox everyone plays in.

I guess I agree with a part of your gist. But not the majority of it. The reason he isn't an elite is because he didn't go to Princeton and then straight into government without running a business first.

I don't expect him to reduce subsidies, but I honestly do expect him to guide things toward a more competitive environment in government acquisitions, not just rubber stamping 'cost plus' bullshit. At least that's my hope.

He’s not a swamp creature bc he’s never held a job in gov. He’s not Biden with 50 years in etc. he’s an outsider. Shit Biden didn’t even invite him to the EV thing

So would Soros be a swamp creature?

Soros is very wealthy, he's been very successful. He also is a naturalized American. Other than whose ox is being gored, what makes one "better" than the other?

No I don’t think soros is. I think Musk with his present activism is very much the other side of the same coin. I hate soros and like Musk but that’s just my bent. They both represent a significant problem

Hegseth is mostly unqualified. But he seems smart and seems to have common sense, unlike those Biden put in many of his admin spots. So we're not worse off. Huge jump for Hegseth, IF he gets confirmed I hope he can do it.
