Party Time

A huge problem for Alford was either: 1) he couldn’t teach the offense that made him the player he was, or 2) he wasn’t stubborn enough to implement and stick with it. He essentially outsourced all the offense to Neal….I never understood that.

It’s a recurring theme with all of Knight’s players….it shows his true genius in putting the puzzle pieces together and being able to build a team.

He, or one of his clones, is not walking back thru that door. The sooner the fanbase (we that saw what the program was) realizes that and accepts that certain things will never be the same…
He always had offense. It was defense he couldn’t teach. Had killer classes. Especially at UCLA.

Not at New Mexico…Neal ran the offense. At UCLA, the fanbase hated him from the start. It was never a good fit….after his son graduated I think he essentially was done with the job. He chased “stars” but didn’t have any defined roles. Extreme leadership void after Bryce graduated.

Knowing the family, I always got the impression that the only reason he took the UCLA job was to give Bryce the same opportunity he had…to win a natty. That obviously wasn’t going to happen at New Mexico

But we have a snapshot of what he was. You Alford guys are funny. Like he all of a sudden becomes a great coach because…Indiana.
There is a big difference between Tom Crean's "It's Indiana!" and what might have been Steve Alford's "Indiana". Steve had connections as a household name in Indiana and nationally because of 1987. Plus, his father came with him as a well-known high school coach in Indiana...two genetically connected coaching minds for the price of one. His hiring would have helped heal wounds a lot sooner. Instead, the liberal IU administration with its anti-anything related to Bob Knight, didn't even extend him as much as a "courtesy offer" to come in for a job interview. That alone tells me something of the dysfunctional "IU family". Some may argue it's been dysfunctional ever since. Woodson's hiring, I'm afraid, has come "too little/too late". Much of Hoosier Nation assumed IU's either real or imagined NIL influence, plus Woodson's pro coaching career, was a springboard to greater things coming our way. Well, here we sit at 2.5 years into Woodson Era, still waiting arrival.

Yes, Coach Alford would have landed Sean May and Cody Zeller, if not former AA and ACC Player of the Year, Tyler Zeller too, from near-by Washington, IN. Oden and Conley? Who really knows but their HS coach, Jack Kieffer, was an avid IU follower thanks to Bob Knight, who I'm sure admired Steve Alford more than the relatively unheralded, except for one well-known player of his (Dwayne Wade), Marquette coach, Tom "clap-happy" Crean. What's really sad is that Crean has been our best coach since Knight's instant firing, the result of Ego-mandated no wiggle room tolerance, opening up the floodgates to an unremarkable and ongoing/no-end-in-sight performances by IU's once heralded basketball program.

FWIW, Thad Matta landed Oden and Conley, only because he was a flash-in-the-pan hot coaching commodity at the time for Ohio State, coming off his relatively short stint at Butler when every Butler coach seemingly managed to lap up from the Bulldog's gravy bowl. Thad Matta is washed up as Butler's coach today, a mere shell on the beach of his former coaching ability. A large part of our excitement with Woodson's hiring came with the packaging of Dane Fife and Thad Matta together. Something happened there, as if two premature ejaculations of disappointment leaving partners unfilled. If Trump hadn't been elected president, Fife might be coaching here soon. Did Thad's back suddenly heal? If not cortisone shots, was it yoga and if so, something Mike should consider? Woodson facebooked in Downward-facing Dog asana might be something going viral, especially in loincloth.

I think the Alford family always assumed Steve would have a crack at the IU job. He maintained a lake-front cottage on Brown County's Sweetwater Lake and conducted coaching clinics with his dad at Franklin College during several summers. If Steve Alford wasn't a natural fit for the IU job, I don't know what is. Everything went deep south when "changing times of morality" paired with IU's liberal administration hellbent on diminishing Bob Knight's authority over the IU campus' admiration of anything IU basketball. "Academics Over Athletics" became the newly announced slogan for the pompous arrogance of the academic elite, so out of touch with the needs of more traditional lifelong citizens found still clothed in more humble threads sewn of Mid-western values.

You're really rolling there so it kind of pains me to say, Matta appears to be righting the ship at Butler right now. Currently 9-2. We'll see how the conference slate goes but I've watched them twice this year and... Not too shabby.

Ok, continue

Matta is far from washed up.
But it is going to be another tuff year for Butler. Brought in about 10 new guys. And competing in the BEast is no picnic. He will have a hard time getting wins.
The other dynamic is Matta wants the AD job that opens this spring with Coliiers retirement.

The guards played their butts off. Mgbako and Reneau don't get back on defense half the time.
Reneau, in particular, doesnt rebound. I would ask Race Thompson to go in the locker room and question the manhood of those 2 guys. One of those lapses in particular led to a foul by Cupps trying to stop numbers in transition. Fouls like that are critical parts of the game.
Every play matters when you are trying to win.

Why did IU keep going to Reneau when Adam's, at 6'7" with 3 fouls, was guarding Ware? Is our 7'0" post not capable of scoring against a strong and determined 6'7" power forward? And this guy thinks he's going pro next year? Is that Ware being weak or Woodson not recognizing the situation?

And why did McCullar not get exploited in the 2nd after picking up 3 reach fouls on drives in the 1st? Kansas had nothing after their starting 5. IU couldn't capitalize because the coaching staff failed to use that strategy to their advantage. They chose instead to go mono for mono against a team with deeper talent.

IU could have, and should have won that game. Kansas was terrible defensively. Indiana was getting the looks they wanted. Getting drives to the bucket with ease.

They just were not locked in defensively after building the lead to get key stops, and did not have good leadership (including Woodson) as the lead slipped away.
Knight would have absolutely buried that team.

Yes, this team needs more guards and more shooters. But if they don't:
1.) Play harder defensively, especially in transition (see TJD highlight video)
2.) Block out and rebound better (outside of Ware)
3.) Do a better job of closing out on shooters

If these things don't happen this team is sunk.
Never go mono for mono, especially when they have more mono.

I always go stereo. Far superior sound quality. Depends a little on the quality of your cartridge though. There are some good mono cartridges out there, but they are expensive.

wtf does a so-called liberal administration have to do with athletic success. does Ohio St have a conservative administration? should we try and get George Santos as the school president? he's out of work right now.

In answer to your veiled question left unmarked as such, more traditionally Midwestern, born and raised in conservatively minded values as administrators would have appreciated the importance of sports, with special emphasis on basketball, to our state's inhabitants. Instead, we have had East/West coast elitists...outsiders, if you will, calling the shots in ways we don't agree. Currently, they're more concerned with alleviated perceived social injustices than relieving problematic hires of our coaches, their professors of sports education.

To be fair, #12 would have been able to recruit like a machine for all the reasons you can imagine.

Now...what he could do with it is not certain by any means.

I must confess I just assumed Butler wasn't doing anything special, not having heard any gleeful squeals emanating from their cob-webbed structure, Hinkle Fieldhouse. Maybe it's because they didn't play in the annual Indy four team "classic" this year. Does Matta's back problem seem to be resolved? I know that was always talk of concern while he sat uncomfortably on Indiana's bench as a possible Woodson replacement someday. Maybe he felt uncomfortable there for other reasons.

He already did at UCLA. Top 5 classes back to back. He did zero with them.

He said the back was better. Said he'd always planned to be a head coach again "someday".

They haven't played conference games yet. I mean, I don't see them beating UConn, or Creighton, or Marquette. They have a lot of new guys. Still, they look much better than the previous couple years. 9-2 to this point

My god. I read this and it just seems so crystal clear to me that our country has about 20 years left.

Do you listen to yourself? You are the one calling the people "outsiders" yet you also have the gull to call them the "elitists"?

Man, it's a big universe out there. Goes on for ****ing ever.

I get you're a man's man, dude. Super conservative, trucker, all that. I get it.

All I can tell you is this: you sound smart until you start rambling about this stuff, then you sound very childish. And dumb.

I'd appreciate it if you'd keep my 18-wheeler out of the argument. She's my livelihood, my mistress, my joyful pride. I spend my night's cradled in the privacy of her womb.
At the interstate rest stops, I write to entertain others, sometimes ruffling feathers of those more easily ruffled.

Emerging from my cab at the first crack of dawn, I see it's the beginning of a new day and a beautiful one at that...it's Game Day! Enjoy your ride.

The difference between RMK and Woodson----Knight knew how to exploit guys with foul trouble to remove them from the game. Woodson doesn't even recognize it. You would think playing for a HC that excelled at it, that Woodson would mirror that but not at all. He has too much NBA in him where it's shoot, shoot, shoot and not drive, get the ball to a post and create foul opportunities, use head fakes. This hockey subbing doesn't work well either. Definitely better put an emphasis on bringing in guards for 24' class and 1 big.McNelly is only forward IU needs unless Banks,Mgbako and Reneau leave at the same time.

Must be a Kenworth

I prefer the newer Peterbuilt, with the newer trip pacs that allow you to run heater or A/C at night without idling. The rollerball control that makes the dashboard info appear or disappear is very Star Wars-esqe

As far as the the picture of the OG post, how do you know that was after he ripped the team? Nice that someone post a rant knight did about playing Purdue and having an 8-10 record, clearly talking about the B10. What about the pre-conference games against Kansas, Duke or other blue bloods? Did he tear up the locker room after a Maui tournament loss? Did he go out after the game with former players for dinner and relax? Didn’t see any current players or some of the coaches in that picture…..maybe the coach are having the players run wind sprints, steps, shooting while woody is greasing the wheels to get more NIL done how about for a theory?

They all have that option now. Kenworth has KIMS and Peterbilt is SmartAir. Etc…used to be aftermarket but the builders started factory installing them.

I’ve only seen the appearing/disappearing dashboards on peterbuilts and kenworths, and not all Volvos, Internationals Mack’s have that …..but spot on about the smart air and KIMS

My 40 year old son-in-law drives an 18-wheeler for Penske, after Blackstone was bought out. I'm embarrassed to say I don't know what brand of rig he negotiates along I-70 but I'll ask when I see him on Christmas day. He leaves at 11 PM from the southwest side of Indy, drives to Columbus, OH, unloads, reloads and has to drive back to Indy's Castleton area for a Tesla drop-off before heading back to the southside. He's burnt-out and hates it. I will say though that Roger treats his drivers well during the Speedway races and my wife and I have periodically been the beneficiary of his employee family perk.
