Palisades fire

Just had it on in the background here in the office.

Anyone notice the cool "Stardust" version in the closing credits?
Ha you have movies on at the office. I usually keep sports on in the background or house shows. It’s funny. There was a time when it was news channels. No more. No tvs at the office have news. Some weather

It's great...the finish though. I woulda wrapped things up better.

Anyone see the 4 hour, 29 min version? 30 mins longer than what we see on the movie channels I guess?
And speaking of long, Italian period pieces...had "1900" on the other day in the background.

Weird, long flick that's like a cross between "Once Upon a Time in America", "The Good the Bad and the Ugly", and "Doctor Zhivago".

There's one scene where DiNiro and Gerard Depardeiu are getting handjobs from some chick, full frontal, and DiNiro reaches over and starts actually yanking Depardieu off. 🫤

On my short list of all time favorites. Just an incredible movie.
Actually had breakfast at the diner where Phillip Seymour Hoffman had coffee with the Enemy, back in the day. Was owned and operated by some Chinese couple. Think it's a taco joint now.

That movie lead me to research why a legit arena tour would stop in Greenville, MS. Could never figure it out. :D

I've never seen the Director's cut. May have to seek it out.

Newsom sucks ass. Calif politics are just so stupid. Squad governance. I watched a bunch of clips on instagram of Newsom out in the wild and residents just lighting him up. Why was there no plan. Why are hydrants empty. On and on. And I’ll tell ya what he just stands there and takes it to his credit. No Biden/Harris “not taking questions” bs we’ve seen for years, Newsom just stands there and eats punch after punch out in the wild. Again to his credit

This should be handled locally. The Federal Government should stay out of it.

I think it’s all hands on deck given the severity. I was just impressed in these instagram clips to see Newsom not behind a lectern or surrounded by a wall of staff but face to face with randos throwing haymakers at him

Sometimes for strategic and capability reasons, you have to let the fire come to you, before you can kill it. I didn't read the whole article but with those winds.... There's no need to get fire personnel killed, just to look good for the public reading the news reports. Houses can be rebuilt, lives are much more precious. Fires like this and fighting wars, do have some similarities. Choose where to bring the fight, don't let the events dictate your moves. .. Just some words, not meant to pardon/ convict anyone.

The tragedy of these fires doesn’t need to be rehashed. Just terrible. The thing about events like this, especially fires, is that they offer incredible and rare opportunity.

After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 the world’s best architects and engineers flocked to Chicago. John Root, Daniel Burnham, William Jenney, etc.

Of course they did. How often does an opportunity like this arise? To design a whole city or major parts of it from scratch. Incredible. A blank canvas. The work done in Chicago was so incredible and so enduring that Chicago, previously a sleepy cowtown, would host the worlds fair two decades later in 1893 believed by many to have been even more impressive than the Paris Worlds Fair of 1889 (creation of the Eiffel Tower). The world’s first skyscraper, Ferris wheel, many of the structures still stand today and for all its faults Chicago is still one of the architectural marvels of the world.

L.A. now is faced with that opportunity. They will fail to capitalize. By the time California’s multi-decade high speed rail project is complete it will be old technology. Innovation, bold thinking that could create the city of the future will be stomped out under the boot of California government.

What we will get is drab McMansions. Brutalist architecture and no creativy.

Americans stopped innovating in the physical world long ago (save Elon). You ride in the same subway car on the same lines people did in the 60’s. We only care about digital innovation sadly.

“Hey mam, I am so sorry you lost your house and everything in it, I’d like to offer 2 million for your lot so you can rebuild and start over”

No! That’s predatory! She needs to go into debt to rebuild that house herself.
