Hoosiers Drop Opener to Ohio State, 7-4
COLUMBUS, Ohio – A five-run sixth inning for the home team was the difference as Indiana baseball (30-20-2) fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes, 7-4, in the first game of a three-game set on Thursday evening.
Senior Craig Dedelow provided both of Indiana's runs on two solo home runs. It marked Dedelow's second multi-home run game of the season, the other one coming on April 30 against Maryland. Sophomore Logan Sowers provided three hits for the Hoosiers and a home run in the loss.
The Buckeyes manufactured a run in the first inning to jump out to an early lead. Tre' Gantt led off the bottom half of the frame with a single, stole second, and then advanced to third on a failed pickoff. Dominic Canzone finished it off with an RBI groundout to give OSU a 1-0 lead.
After the first, Stiever retired the 10 of the next 11 hitters he faced heading into the fifth inning, including nine straight. In the top of the fifth frame, Dedelow knocked out his 14th home run of the season to knot the contest up at one apiece.
The Buckeyes broke the game open in the top of the sixth inning. A leadoff triple by Ohio State's Jalen Washington set things up early, as Canzone drove him in on his second RBI groundout. From there, the Buckeyes strung together four consecutive hits and plated two runs to knock Stiever out of the game. Two more singles resulted in two more runs to make it a 6-1 game.
Indiana got a rebound run from Dedelow in the seventh with his second home run of the night and 15th of the year.
The Buckeyes manufactured one more in run in the eighth to extend the lead to 7-2.
Sowers knocked out his ninth home run of the season to trim the lead to four runs on a solo shot. Freshman Matt Gorski then singled and stole second, and eventually scored on an error by the third baseman to make it a 7-4 game in favor of OSU.
