Here's a pretty good take on one possible reason these rumors might have been spread in the first place. Short version: Haley is a competent, influential woman whom some people who disagree with her on policy feel the need to undermine, and the easiest way to undermine a woman is to accuse her of sleeping around. I.e., Wolff may have thought he was just spreading gossip about Trump, but whoever told him the rumors to begin with was probably targeting Haley.

I actually think a sex scandal makes it feel like the political world is sort of getting back to normal.

(For those who missed it, WSJ reporting that Trump paid hush money to a porn star shortly before election to keep her quiet about an affair from 2006.)
