What’s wild is that I made a post last year on Oct 5 (after PSU game) and IU’s SP+ was:

IU: 59th overall. 73rd offense, 35th defense, 84th Special Teams

Today they’re, 81, 95, 68, & 67.

I know stats like this aren’t supposed to have bias, but this doesn’t pass the eye test for me, particularly with the offensive rating. I think this offense is objectively better than last year, at least so far. I’d agree that the defensive performance is down, but I wouldn’t guess by nearly that much.

It’s a different season … the data compares teams in the same season …
comparing across seasons may be better focused on the per game metrics.

That said the defense started strong last year … and then got depleted.

Both offense and defense are playing better this year than the last two games (Gophers and Boilers), I think we can all agree.
