There was a lot of chatter among fans that Florida would fire Napier and go after Cig this off-season. If Auburn dumps Freeze they might pursue Cig but I don’t know of any other high profile Big Ten or SEC school that might have an opening.

I've shifted my IU pessimistic worrying to NFL teams...

Napier has definitely righted the ship well this year. And FSU's coach has an astronomical buyout. Maybe if there's Lane Kiffin movement, or if Auburn comes at him hard enough???

But if I'm Cignetti, and I get IU to the CFP, why go to another college program?

My IU pessimism tells me it would be the most "IU thing ever" if a team like the Bears hired Cig, and his entire staff, after this year. Cig, Shannahan, and Sunsieri with Caleb Williams, could be scary! Ha ha...nervous ha ha...

Michigan isn’t going to pull the plug on Moore after one season. They think of it as a transition year so he gets leeway to get going. Riley has a $88 million buyout. I don’t think they can afford it. Likewise, Oklahoma would have to pay Venables $44.8 million if he is fired this season,

Those schools can't afford the buyout with revenue sharing being enacted next season.

Cignetti isn't going to USC and I don' tthink he'd put up with the shit at Auburn. I don't think either of those schools will have an opening this year anyway. Oklahoma could, but I'd call it less than 20% chance.

Everyone who fires a coach calls the agent of a successful coach. Cig’s agent will, and likely has, received many calls. Only thing we can do is make him happy. That is money for him AND his assistant coaches. Not everything is money; we need to show appreciation and even affection. His wife and kids need to like Btown.
From a professional standpoint a few goals like the first IU big ten championship, first CFP, first Nat Champ, etc could also appeal to his competitive side.

Scott could stop all this speculation now.

It’s the middle of the season. No one bothers their coach and staff with mid season contract talks.

Scott targeted him, convinced him to come here, and made the hire. He’s the right guy to handle whatever needs doing once the regular season is over.

I have faith in scott but why wait till the end of the season. It seems to me a simple conversation would do it.

Scott may have verbally communicated an intent to do XYZ -- I don't know have to trust his judgement here. But finalizing contract changes takes days of back and forth: proposal, agent/coach/lawyer review, counter proposal, etc. etc. until final. And whatever is done could include the staff, involving more people and making it take longer. An announcement would be a distraction. Now is not the right time to do all this, they're focused on some huge games.

I agree we should do all we can to make it work with this staff, but timing has to wait.
