Movies, books, tv

Netflix is remaking All Quiet on the Western Front. The book was outstanding, the original movie very good, the first remake was good. The trajectory isn't good, but maybe they can pull it off.

Nazi Germany tried to get Remarque back to be tried before the war, they would later behead his sister with the judge basically saying that her brother may be out of reach but she is not. Even well after the war Remarque's mooks were not popular in Germany because he was still viewed as a traitor.

Yep, he was a traitor because he had written a fictious novel about WWI that didn't portray the government in a very good light :)

I don't know, man. I'm sick of people redoing things that were already done correctly the first time.

Then again, I'm not mad at Branagh for redoing Henry V, just because Olivier nailed it already. So maybe I should be less stodgy about people wanting to offer their own vision of a classic.

I have a similar feeling, why remake this when there are so many other stories not told.

But many people today refuse to watch black and white, so if this is a great retelling it opens the story up to so many people.

Is this thing really that bad? Looks horrible.

People like that "satirist" seem to hate Black elves, probably while owning paintings of White Jesus. The series is stunningly OK. I have read a lot of reviews, spoken to several people, I haven't heard anyone claim it is great or even very good. It seems to be "good enough to watch".

But damn, the Black elf sure made people angry. I wonder why.

Because they don't exist?

They’re green

If they existed, yes, like Vulcans. But elves

Though D&D added Drow, Black elves.

I am not a purist so long as changes work. There are purists upset with any change. Then there are people only mad at Black Elves. Hmm.

I have watched John Wayne play Genghis Khan, Liz Taylor play Cleopatra, Ted Neeley play Jesus. I think real life characters should, when possible, be accurate. I wish someone would make a movie on Boudica, and she probably should be White given the historical nature. But in fantasy, I don't care.

I watch with my son. I’ve fallen asleep during every episode.

I haven't watched the last episode yet, and that makes me wonder if I will. I am thinking of it as "that is OK, I hope it gets better soon". Maybe soon hasn't happened soon enough. I had more hopes for this than Dragon, Dragon had been better until it got creepy.

I had way more hope for Rings of Power. It looks great but is painfully boring. I can’t believe they spent almost a billion dollars on it.

I stopped watching House of Dragons after the 2nd or 3rd episode. I’ll wait and maybe try to binge it.

I think some shows (west world S4 might fit this bill) are not good enough to stand up to week-to-week waiting and actually watch better with binging. Not sure what qualities make that so, but I think it really is a thing.

We are finally plodding through Peaky Blinders season six. What a disappointment so far. The script is unimaginative and the lines boring. This was a good to great gangster epic and now it’s a story about fighting personal daemons. Those stories are a dime a dozen and never held my interest. I feel like I’m watching the finale of Ray Donovan which I also didn’t like.

They really should just tag in Vince Gilligan for every series ending at this point.

Can we talk about Severance? I know a couple here have seen it. If you haven’t, put it on your list. Premise is that a company takes volunteers to sever their work life from their home life. When they are either place, they have no memory of the other. Starts a little slow, but builds and finale was very tense and satisfying, but definitely wanting more. Phenomenal acting , with Adam Scott, Patricia Arquette, John Tuturto, Christopher Walken and some good supporting actors. Definitely worth getting Apple for a month to watch, IMO. 9 episodes.
Finally started watching Severance, at the request of my daughter, who loves it.
I'm through E5 and am thoroughly entertained and curious for what will happen next.
Turturro and Walken together are worth the price of admission.

They just went through the motions - and left room for future motions

I couldn’t do it week by week. I watched two and stopped. I’ll binge it later if people say it’s good
Star Wars is fun, but the bright line between good and evil has limits regarding how serious it a show can be. In Martin's universe, everyone is simultaneously good and evil (except Joffre, I don't know if he ever had a good side in the series). That may work great for the books but in both series, I am wondering about that choice. It becomes difficult to want anyone to succeed. In Martin's universe, the gap between Mother Theresa and Pol Pot is exceedingly small. It makes it more difficult to really care who comes out on top.

Nope. I found 2 and 3 boring, repetitive, and overly complex.

Season 4 was flawed but at least had a narrative direction.

But I’m not a fan of the series. I wanted to be but from the beginning, have been disappointed.
I loved seasons 1 and 2. I had hopes after season 3, but it wasn't as good.

Season 4 was terrible. I tried to love it, and technically, it was well done, so I could suffer through it, but the ending was just godawful.

I have been told by others that the show will probably be cancelled. I hope so, because season 4 ended in such a way that only two things can happen: 1) the show ends, and it serves as a fitting, if disappointing, series finale, or 2) season 5 is a complete shit show that does nothing but rip off season 1.

I just hope they don't screw up S5 of Yellowstone. I thought S4 was a little weak. And 1883 was a snooze fest.
On to another show, maybe the worst - and, thus, the funniest - show ever —-Monarch.

Cringe-worthy. But so bad, and so poorly acted, that you have to keep peaking around your hands to see what more horrible things they’ll do. Susan Sarandon’s funeral is just so fantastically ridiculous that you laugh out loud and puke simultaneously.

The second episode is just about finished. There has to an agency somewhere, state, federal, globally or galactically, that can and will bar anyone associated in any way with this show from ever having anything to do with any form of entertainment in the future.
