I answer to “Andy”.If I see a guy wearing a short sleeved dress shirt and a tie I call them Sipowicz.
Allegedly true. But I got bored. Much, much better is Vienna Blood on PBS. I’m just 1 episode in, but it appears to be a period take on criminal profiling.No. Good stuff?
Good call on Rip. Did you see that sign on a Canadian truck: “Rip says to give you a ride to the train station”.Quinn from Homeland before his injury was a fantastic tough guy. RIP from Yellowstone
Is that the limited series "Manhunt"? They did another "Manhunt" series on the Atlanta Olympics bombing. I think both are on Netflix.Allegedly true. But I got bored. Much, much better is Vienna Blood on PBS. I’m just 1 episode in, but it appears to be a period take on criminal profiling.
If you haven’t seen that show about catching the unibomber, that is a must. About using what he wrote as being legally sufficient for a search warrant.
Mindhunters was an excellent show.Have you watched Mindhunters yet?
That’s it. I haven’t seen the Atlanta one.Is that the limited series "Manhunt"? They did another "Manhunt" series on the Atlanta Olympics bombing. I think both are on Netflix.
Agree. I’m a huge Fincher fan. Zodiac is very high on my all time movie list.Mindhunters was an excellent show.

The glorification of stupidity elected Trump. The Reverend Jim and Latka are two of the most unexpected and amazing characters ever created!
Did you mean to respond to me?The glorification of stupidity elected Trump.![]()

You needn’t take it is political. I’m criticizing the cultural phenomenon of glorifying stupidity. I find the “humor” of Reverend Jim anything but surprising and humorous.Delete this. This has been a non political thread through more than 2k posts snd almost 4 years. Let’s keep it that way.
Full credit @zeke4ahs for posting something we can all amicably shareDelete this. This has been a non political thread through more than 2k posts snd almost 4 years. Let’s keep it that way.
Yes sir. To me the Reverend Jim humor is boring, pathetic, insulting, and glorifies stupidity. It’s anything but surprising. To each her own of course.Did you mean to respond to me?
Hmmm...I guess you were actually intending to respond to me. I couldn't fathom it was in response to my post since I didn't imagine someone actually seriously thinking that Latka and Reverend Jim glorify stupidity. That totally misses the point of both characters. You might find it interesting to take the time to go deeper on both of them. There's some pretty good reading on the series and some really great interviews with the creators that talk about what they were trying to do on a deeper level with the various characters.Yes sir. Well I spent about 10 minutes trying to find what you were describing and evidently failed. Christopher Lloyd surely doesn’t do it much justice in any of his recent stuff that I listened to on YouTube.Hmmm...I guess you were actually intending to respond to me. You think people wanted to be like Reverend Jim? It's fascinating that you think that Reverend Jim glorifies drug use when his character actually was drawn to do the exact opposite. Don't get how Latka relates to glorifying drug use either and he certainly doesn't glorify stupidity, but I guess you have your theories on it. We'll just have to agree to disagree.Well I spent about 10 minutes trying to find what you were describing and evidently failed. It might be more apparent to people that my criticism would be glorifying drug use, including its after effects, but to me that’s just a subcategory of glorifying stupidity. Intelligent, young people can make the mistake of taking drugs, but I don’t think any mature person who delves into the topic would seriously consider it something intelligent to do or glorify.
I understand it’s common in liberal circles to consider drugs OK or whatever. I love Dave Chapelle but sadly he occasionally glorifies drug use in his routines. The simple truth is, drugs ruin lives and families and it’s a very sad and prevalent part of our society. Worst of all, younger and younger children are becoming drug addicts especially in larger cities.
I haven’t said a thing about Latka. We'll just have to agree to disagree.
One of the odder exchanges I've had on The Cooler. You think glorifying drug use comes out of a portrayal where drugs make a character pitiful? Because being pitiful is somehow glorious?I haven’t said a thing about Latka.
Yes, I absolutely think characterizations as in Reverend Jim, no matter how mocking or ridiculous, have a subtle effect of normalizing his behavior to some degree. He remains an endearing, lovable, cute, funny character. The drugs merely make him pitiful or however you care to describe it.
Nowadays drugs have become so normalized in our society that addiction is considered an illness. In essence we’ve become a spectator society: we just watch people become addicted.
It’s an inversion. Jim represents certain glorious virtues, endearing, loveable, honest, open, juxtaposed with the sad aftereffects of drug addiction. The juxtaposition has a subtle effect of equating his drug use with his virtues. One of the odder exchanges I've had on The Cooler. Like I said - agree to disagree.
I had to read Mismeasure of Man for a class at IU many years ago. I didn't mind it for a course read.last books:
current book:
- Idea Factory: Bell Labs (very good)
- Mismeasure of Man (not good)
Next:
- Creativity, Inc (just ok)
Music: Nathaniel Rateliff, and for some reason Steve Earle
- Perfectionists: precision engineers (Winchester)
- Dealers of Lightning: Xerox PARC and the Dawn of the Computer Age
- Lila: An Inquiry Into Morals
TV: only tv i will tune into is Antiques Roadshow, This Old House, and some local arts show that is before this old house....my kids watch Cartoon Network shows on Hulu, and i will admit i get sucked into those
Nah...where we really disagree is in the part about Jim glorifying drug use. It’s an inversion. Jim represents certain glorious virtues, endearing, loveable, honest, open, juxtaposed with the sad aftereffects of drug addiction. The juxtaposition has a subtle effect of equating his drug use with his virtues.
Putting a beautiful woman next to a Cadillac shouldn’t persuade one about the quality of the car, but it does in the minds of mice and men.
Plus, bottom line is I think Jim‘s humor is trite, predictable, and boring. Evidently that’s where we really disagree.
OK.Nah...where we really disagree is in the part about Jim glorifying drug use.
Anyone watching the Lincoln show on the History Channel? I think it's good so far.
Not a high bar to be honest.Yup. Not too bad. One of the better History Channel productions.
Not a high bar to be honest.
Yeah, I was afraid it was going to be a docudrama, but when they cut away to DKG in the first three minutes, I knew it would be good.True. I'm glad it's more documentary than drama.
Yes. All the hints of his behavior that we missed. It was fascinating to go back and see how different tv was then. Cosby show was a treasure. And he was America's dad. I didnt realize he had multiple other failed Cosby shows.McMurtry I just finished the Cosby documentary. Hard to watch without feeling sick. But I’d forgotten how much I truly loved him and how good he really was. My dad had all his albums and I still remember some of the catchphrases. The first time I got turned off by him was when he was on a late night show and was absolutely rotten to the host. That was well after the Cosby Show which was must see.
Yeah, I’m enjoying this. Not the greatest, but pretty damn good. But I like all things Lincoln. “The most interesting man in the world”, of all times.Anyone watching the Lincoln show on the History Channel? I think it's good so far.
