Difference here is McCollum would have still won. It just wouldn't have been a comfortable situation for him...again, just guessing.
I think he would have come in, won the Big 10 in his first or 2nd year, and would have been well on his way to effectively insulating himself from all the outside noise. But getting him to come to a place like IU, where he'd have to work to create that "freedom of movement"...when he'll have his pick of really any college looking for a coach, every year, for the next few years... well, I suspect both he and Dolson moved on pretty quickly.
I think Dolson could have made a mistake. But that's only if DeVries doesn't do well. McCollum isn't the ONLY really good, young coach capable of turning IU around.
