McCollum

I have a hard time believing he turned us down unless he felt he could not handle the pressure cooker. Why would he not take a massive raise to run on a top program if he is such an alpha male ready for any challenge. So he could take Iowa for less money?
He's a different cat. BMC could have bolted to D1 much earlier. I think loyalty means something to him ... and he'll stay at Drake. Or maybe Iowa really is his dream job.

That being said DD was not even in my top three. Beard was my top choice.
I don't think any of us KNOW why...but its not difficult when you listed to him talk, read about him, etc... to come to the conclusion that he probably didn't want to deal with the IU "ecoystem" that includes influential Alums, donors, etc... And in talking with Dolson, they both realized it was probably always going to be uncomfortable for McCollum. Dolson may have taken that as a negative with regards to McCollum, maybe not...obviously I'm just guessing, so I'm speaking out of my ass. But I bet I'm in the ballpark.

That's what I'm saying. If he didn't turn us down, he wasn't asked. It doesn't matter now. We have a new coach.

Exactly why so many said there is so much more to the IU coach than just the coaching part. Archie was in way over his head in regards to all of that. If McCullum is only interested in just the coaching aspect and not all the other stuff he will need to go to a smaller program will less pressure and outside forces like big donors and alumni who cut the big checks. That is one reason I am not so sure he would have done that great at IU it did not seem like a good match because of all the stuff you listed.

Difference here is McCollum would have still won. It just wouldn't have been a comfortable situation for him...again, just guessing.

I think he would have come in, won the Big 10 in his first or 2nd year, and would have been well on his way to effectively insulating himself from all the outside noise. But getting him to come to a place like IU, where he'd have to work to create that "freedom of movement"...when he'll have his pick of really any college looking for a coach, every year, for the next few years... well, I suspect both he and Dolson moved on pretty quickly.

I think Dolson could have made a mistake. But that's only if DeVries doesn't do well. McCollum isn't the ONLY really good, young coach capable of turning IU around.

For better, worse, or indifferent, DeVries will be compared to Dusty and McCollum.

Why didi he stay at a D2 school for 15 years?

Archie thought he could handle it, but could not.

McCollum (assuming he was offered) may have realized he didn't want it, and declined.
