I know that sounds dramatic. And maybe I'm overblowing how much negative press he's gotten from his comments on Indiana and SMU. But man, it sure seems like he's taking more than a little flack for his ridiculous take that IU, and SMU to a lesser extent, didn't belong in the CFP.

And now, rather than issuing some sort of mild back tracking platitude...to show that he has a semblance of objectivity in him...he's trying to mansplain to everyone how everyone misunderstood what he meant...without actually correcting anything that he said.

Herbstreit's entire persona, his popularity, is rooted in how above the fray he's always been, how unbiased, how thoughtful and practical his takes always are. Even the whole golden retriever thing plays in to the wholesome, golden boy, loves everyone approach. Heck, even his "I can't make a prediction, I'm calling the game."...has further solidified his objectivity.

He's literally losing all that, and becoming a shock jock, like everyone else. I'm sure he has "people". Maybe this is a purposeful approach. Maybe he's gonna break off and try to be a Pat MacAfee with pod casts and all that? But his initial take was awful. Pretty much everyone now realizes it was awful. And all he needed to do, was use some self deprecating approach to issue some sort of mild mea culpa. It actually would have perfectly fit who he is. It probably would have made him even more popular. He could have even held on to some of the notions...but tied them in with the self deprecation, and then showing he actually is objective.

Whatever he's doing or thinking, it isn't impressive.

He said Indiana didn’t belong in the cfp and many people took that to mean he thinks Alabama should have been there because they were the 1st team out. His only correction was to say that he didn’t believe AL was that team, but has never clarified who he thinks “deserves” to be in over IU. I use that word purposely because he tried to distinguish between best and “most deserving” which I believe are one in the same. There is no team left out of the cfp that I believe was better than IU. South Carolina and Ole Miss were “capable” of beating IU on a neutral or their home field, but I don’t think they were better. People just need to realize the committee got it right and at the end of the day the two best teams will play for the nc with no argument that anyone left out would have beat them. I think everyone agrees that changes such as seeding and automatic bids need work, but I think their selection criteria was spot on and as fair as possible. If Kirk doesn’t believe so he needs to provide concrete examples of why he thinks there were better options.

Even in the 4-team playoff format, there was blowout after blowout after blowout. Yet, because it was the likes of OU, ND, Washington, FSU et al, being the teams getting blasted, teams with some pedigree behind them, these chumps never said
“(fill in blown out team) didn’t belong in that semifinal.” Only happens this year when some “party crashers” like IU or SMU make it. 11-1 in a P4 deserves to be in. As did SMU. Not IU’s fault that both Washington and UM didn’t live up their end of the bargain.

The issue here, KIRK, is that wasn't the problem. Where the hell did OSU, ND or Michigan (for gods sake), come into play???? The criticism was that he implied IU as well as SMU and others shouldn't have been invited. Thus implying the SEC teams should've been in their place. This would naturally give the SEC a better shot at winning the title due to having more teams involved. We give too much weight to historical success and to having more 4 & 5 star recruits. The fact of the matter is that Alabama's 2024 season did not in reality support Kirby's conclusion. Did Bama have a higher ceiling than Indiana? Yeah, probably. But if we start letting past success and hypothetical potential overwrite the actual play on the field then we are saying we already know who is the best and the games don't really matter. Herbstreit understands this perfectly well but still he does his little dance for the Pied Piper in Bristol.

PS was leading the charge but Herbstreit followed a hard second. Both heavily in the bag for the SEC, or at minimum, against any of the new money teams being in the FBS.
