Major Memorial Stadium renovations coming in 2024 (or maybe not)…

“In other projects, renovations for Memorial Stadium are projected to begin sometime in 2024 and continue into 2027.”

Concourse improvements including restrooms and concessions. Hopefully east side suites phase one can get going assuming they are confident the pre-covid support is till there from the Indy business community.

Also wouldn't be surprised to see a major update to the weight room and related team facilities. In 2027 (projected completion), the NEZ will be 18 years old

Anyone who's seen Northwestern's facility on lake Michigan knows Mellencamp and the current MS weightroom is not keeping pace, so maybe that is part of it, not sure what actual fan improvements at MS will result in greater attendance. Clearly restrooms and concessions would help, but I'm not really sure what a game changer would be, individual seats are probably not doable because of lack of leg room.

The concourses need a great deal of work, and the overall “training“ facilities are in need of a big update. The NU facility is stunning, but the price tag was well over $200M, so it should be. We need to catch up.

Amazing how many issues there are with a building that's relatively new, in BT years. We're lucky we're dealing with a 60 year old building rather than a 100 year old building.

My #1 project is the press box. It just doesn't look big-time and is taking down the rest of the building in that regard.

Then, at least a facelift or sand blasting for Mellancamp. It's godawful ugly. I'll leave the functionality to those who know, and the training facilities as well.

Concessions are big. I'm ok with the restrooms.

East side suites would be nice, and finally would do something about the weird imbalance in # of rows between east and west sides.

Agree there's really no game changer to put butts in the seats. I do think Cosmetic changes in this instance would be pretty big---Press box right now looks like a glorified Texas HS PB. East side suites would give the place more of a big-time feel ala Wisconsin.

The NEX and SEZ additions helped a lot....with these changes it would be an impressive facility. You want recruits and fans to be impressed with the overall look of the facility.....first impressions........

The press box has always been underwhelming to say the least, but with technology advancements, the traditional press box is a very different/smaller critter, Most today are multi purpose spaces for premium seating, meetings and income-generating events. A slight expansion could do that with ours.

The key is the suites on the east side. There will be zero issues leasing 40 - 45 of them with some common event space tacked on as a phase 1.

Concourse reno as I posted above is coming. The bathrooms are a pain. When they changed from Indy 500-stlye troughs to urinals is slows things down tremendously. That and ADA requirements make things even more inefficient. As much as we disliked the SEZ table we bought last year, the good news was convenient nice bathrooms and immediate food and drink.

Everyone bitches about the concessions. I take your word for it, as I don;t use them outside od a beer stop at a kiosk which is never an big deal.

We complain, but MS is a tremendous beautiful facility with awesome video systems.

Anyone who attended the Cincinnati game knows the concession situation is an ongoing embarrassment. Beyond that, I think most will be surprised at what is and is not a part of the work to be done.

They really need to move the flagpole. It sits between the video screen and the East bleachers, which is dumb.
Yeah, I thought that was a strange placement as well, perhaps move the visitors section over there if it is staying put.

First you giveth...and then you taketh away :(
Anything material for the stadium / facilities would be part of a capital campaign, and that would come with committed seed money (a major gift or gifts), renderings of the additions and changes, and all of the associated fanfare that would be part of a major announcement. It’s why I said people would be surprised by what is and isn’t a part of this. Right now, there just isn’t demand for anything else, though we need to stay up to date in the facilities race. If we can build a winning program, all kinds of possibilities could arise, tho.

Well, we have to do something with Mellencamp...or tear it down for premium parking and build a new facility in the Orange lot
I've never liked the design of Mellencamp Pavilion. It mimics a quonset hut from WW II, designed on the cheap, built quickly. The same goes for the old field house next to AH. I can't imagine John approving that design with his name on it. Maybe its a small town thing. The good news is, easy to build, easy to tear down.

It never made sense to obstruct views with something so easily placed outside of the field area. Somebody wasn’t thinking.
That's not the first time. See west stand vs. east stand. West is too high, east not high enough. They should have leveled out somewhere in between. Maybe when east suites are added they might put it closer in visual balance. "Beauty in symmetry", it's really not that hard of concept to grasp, especially at an institute of higher learned behavioral attitudes.

The east side was meant to be as high as the west. They ran short of money and decided to stop at the level where the upper entries are on the west.

I miss those troughs, having never minded buddying up with guys on each side, fighting hard to keep my focus limited. It was probably the splash factor that made them change their ways, the modern day cry for better hygiene. And then there was the acrid smell, ten blends of urine flowing past dilated nostrils. I always held my breath until I turned blue or those last drops hit the pants, whichever came first. Speaking of urinals, where have all the biscuits gone, long time passing?

I don’t miss them and you have done a great job of painting the why picture.

Memorial Stadium has already had quite a bit of work done on it over the last decade. North and South Endzones, new team locker-room and lounge, renovated restrooms, and landscaped parking lots.
And new lights this summer.

concourses and suites are next

I get nostalgic for the "watering" troughs, the efficiency of them. It goes back to adolescent days at IMS in the early '60's. Guys were packed so tight in there one could barely move with the roar of Offenshausers in the background along with the guttural sound of the Novi...ah, the good ole days.

The guy who had the job of removing the 12" wide clog of cigarette butts, lugies and vomit chunks on the hour.

I think at the time they didn't need greater seating capacity and the way it's built it can easily be added on to to create more seating. Probably still don't need the greater seating capacity.

They definitely didn’t need it, especially since they were leaving a stadium with capacity of roughly 35,000. But they absolutely planned to finish the east side so that it mirrored the west stands . . . Funding became an issue. The footings are in the ground if they ever want to build it to the top. Obviously, putting suites there would be a great addition, but there’s never been any demand for that. It would require committed gifts and a capital campaign to get it going, and no one has ever stepped up to pledge funds for such a venture. Hopefully, we build a winning program and that demand ramps up.

Those troughs would make nice keepsakes today once they were sanitized 100 times...good conversation items in one's bar area. I know of a couple guys who installed wall urinals in their home bathrooms. I wish I had thought of that one when I built mine 23 year ago. I always loved drilling a hole in the biscuits. The only thing better is deep snow.

You got it right. The plan was to build it to the height we have, with the infrastucture in place to allow expansion if ever needed. After all, they were more than doubling capacity from the 20,000 seat 10th St Stadium or Lil' 5 Stadium as it was referred to until the event was moved to Armstrong.

Good thing the expansion never happened because not only are the west stands too tall for good viewing but now the suites can be dropped in nicely. The Rock will be one of the nicest mid-sized stadiums in the country, and when you combine this with the fantastic tailegating areas and beautiful fall Saturdays in Btown....Man.

Clean and shine the trough, fill it with low-volt lighting and whatever memorabilia is appropriate and cover with Climaclear glass that you see in stadiums. Use as a bar.
